I washed and polished mine today to banish some of the woes from yesterday. Damage not as bad as i thought but will need a machine polish if nothing else.
I also painted my drivers door silver bit as it was covered in ring scratches from the PO. Looks much better.
Oil, diff and gearbox done. Postie came quite early today which was ideal. Box was burst and the bottle of diff fluid was leaking - fortunately just enough left to fill. Not the Posties fault but that’s the 3rd parcel from Royal Mail this year that’s arrived battered. Applaud him for turning it upside down for me though, kept the spillage to a minimum.
Thought I’d gone well over with the engine oil but checked again 20 minutes later and it had settled to a whisker over. Was thinking I’d get away with 2 bottles of gear oil but definitely needed the 3rd before it started dribbling. I was dribbling well before that.
I’m away for a hoon up the West Coast next few days. Brought some tools as have to sort the lock shield from when I replaced the actuator - the outside door handle doesn’t close all the way without a help. Read on the forum here where this happens if you don’t fit the lock plate thingy back correctly. Also got a new rubber thingy and selector plate (?) to fit to the gear stick. Read all the threads and still unsure if I should see turret oil in my 2014 6 speed.
New washers and Mazda oil filter from MX5Parts (with club discount, ayeee)

Cheers Wardy, on mobile so never really sure how it’ll turn out. Aye, I ordered all the fluids from Opie (as usual). Sent them a couple of pics in case they wanted to claim from RM - they refunded me anyway despite me saying I had enough to do the job.
Day off work & had bought a brass gearstick collar & oil a couple of months ago from @DuratecNC ( highly recommended). So, I thought a respectable amount of procrastination time had passed & sought about the dusty toolbox.
Just as well really, as the rubber gearshift boot had been snowing tiny pieces of black rubber into the turret cavity, which, although had probably seen oil at some stage, led me to believe it had not been recently, as it was pretty grim in there.
All sorted , cleaned & lubed in about an hours worth of ham fistedness!
Then got to the box oil, which was shockingly straightforward enough.
Definitely time well spent. I must report that having taken the car out & deprived the world of a few litres of Shells’ finest, gear changes are feeling noticeably smoother & precise. I couldn’t really say which component or just the addition of turret oil did the trick!
Took it for an aircon regas. I figured that at fourteen years old, it was probably about time someone treated the aircon to a bit of love! (And yes, it does blow colder now). I’m viewing it as preventive maintenance, looking after the aircon compressor. £47 well spent!
Oh, and put a bit wax on the car earlier this week, too
Did my plate and booty thingy today. The new boot came with a plastic ring whereas the one I replaced had a cable tie, which makes me think a previous owner had it apart at one point.
There wasn’t any visible oil in the turret and only remnants of grease. Pics below show all the black crud from the old foam ring as well as (an attempted) comparison of old and new lockout plate. Put some of the leftover gear oil in, probably about 50ml, and watched it nearly completely disappear then greased up the balls and reassembled.
The hardest part is that plug for the window switches.
Just done this job myself & I Couldn’t agree more about those window switches, they took a lot of swearing to get off
The noticeable improvement in gear change feel is very satisfying.
Swopped over wheels. Waiting for SSR Type C delivery from Japan. SSR Type X sold and Rondell Magics 15 x 7 et28 as a temp/poss winter wheel. Eff me they are heavy compared to the SSR. Not sure if i like them yet.
