What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

its an AC unit, and all the other pulleys / rollers feel solid… so It should all be a matter of putting it back together.

I am probably going to use a little thread locker on the bolts though, as I think while its wet, it’ll help get them in a bit easier and this new tensioner should long outlive my time with the car!

and yes, prices are mad now… mazda wanted £240 for the tensioner and £70 for the belt.

MX5 parts was £140/50 respectively.

Got my wheels refurbed again. Went for anthracite last time, gone for dark bronze this time. Quite happy with the colour!

When we’re the wheels taken off last, could the nuts not have been tightened properly rather than someone loosening them while it was parked. Seems a strange thing to do.

Wheels were off a few weeks ago so I could replace the dust covers on the control arms before the MOT. They were torqued up properly to the specs given in the Haynes manual and then once they were all done I went round again and double checked them again just to make sure they were tight.

We have success

Got the old dash out. Not a bad job. 3 hours. Mostly spent finding and freeing bits of snagging loom. A bit nerve wracking and at times had me questioining my life decisions. Carpet out next then replacemnets going in

  • Bought a piece of Poly Carbonate plate,
  • took a saw,
  • cut out the shape of the space between the seats,
  • Searched for band aids
  • Cleaned the blood of the piece of Poly Carbonate,
  • took a chisel.
  • carved out the letters.
  • needed another band aid,
  • Looked at my work and cried a little bit,
  • Threw it all away since it was sh*te,

Went online a found some French guy who makes these wind deflectors.

And Voilá, I have a new Wind deflector. Have just fitted it so not sure if it helps but I thought it looked cool with the engraving.

You probably don’t want to hear this now, but the dash wiring harness should come out along with the dashboard by unplugging the large connectors on each side. To make reinstallation easier, you could probably reattach the harness to the dash while it’s out.

Not a biggie but I finally got round to improving the front number plate attachment. Being only held by two screws at the top and unsupported over its depth because of the angle of the grille it seemed a bit wobbly, so I added some double sided tape to the back of the plate. Before refitting it I drilled new holes and raised the top edge of the plate to touch the top of the grille aperture. With the combination of screws and tape the plate is now firmly attached with no wobble.

That could have been disastrous had you not noticed. Some people are indeed scumbags!

Looks very smart :heart::+1:

Thanks for the reply.
I tried all that and after many minutes up side down in the footwell i think the aftermarket alarm and immobilisers has been woven into the loom. I didnt want to disturb it too much because i am a coward!!
I will reattach it all to the stong back bar on the new dash and make sure there are no rattles.

Check over before our road trip. All fluid levels, tyre condition and pressures, lights, fit new wiper blade’s and paint arms, tidy out glovebox. I’ll give it a wash and a hoover on Friday.

Found the remains of a tin of VHT aluminum paint so thought I’d bulls**t up my silencer a bit.

Disappointed by the eBay one, doesn’t taper onto the original mount at all so you can see the metal plate. I suspect it might leak as well. So sent it back and ordered the £20 one from MX5 parts (not AS stubby). :man_shrugging:. They claim there is no degradation of reception compared to the original. This one comes with an adapter ring for the base so should look nice and smart.

A little detailing, not much, the last owner kept it meticulously clean and waxed.
First wash and remove a couple of surface scratches in the paint and some wheel care.:+1:

Looking good Mick. I notice the previous owner has fitted the side reflectors as well - nice touch :+1:

Yes all wired up plus he fitted sequential indicators to the rear and wing repeaters and flashing high brake light.:+1:

My flashing brake light meant a failed MOT, suggest revert to steady at test time.
