What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Are you also replacing the rubber hoses on each side, as they too can become clogged?

How much would it cost to change the serpentine belt, tensioner and idler pulley? £300?! No thanks I’ll have a go myself!

Instantly stepped outside with my new bits. Goodbye Screech!

That’s my next job on the list. I’ve got a “tick” each revolution of the belt and it’s done 88,000 miles so probably time for a new one. Silly not to do the tensioner and idler as well. Where did you get the replacements from?

There was a bit of faff with stock on the usual sites, so I ended up on Autodoc and getting all of it from there, which actually worked out quite well..it’s not a bad site for spares and repairs.

While replacing the bulbs in the instrument cluster I realised I’d accidentally covered the high-beam indicator when I previously installed a new colour dial trim. In the process of trying to fix that I accidentally propelled, at very high speed, the needle stop pin for the rev counter into the depths of my shed. Stupid stupid stupid. I’d just thought to myself “oh while I’m here I’ll just sort that before I put it all back together”.

Love my NB, Peanut. Plenty of work to do, and plenty already done, but I’ll get there.

I have previously dropped pliers on top of my radiator fan, and then faffed picking them up, so they fell through the fan onto the rad itself. Took me 2 hours of pulling the engine bay apart…

My whole workshop is like the Bermuda triangle.

Mine too. I have ordered a spares cluster from eBay and will replace the pin from there!

Me too, I “lost" an 8mm ring spanner in that gap between the bonnet release & radiator recently. After what seemed like hours trying to retrieve it, I gave up. Could still be somewhere down there still….who knows :winking_face_with_tongue:

Just ordered the parts from Autodoc - Ta for the info PPP.

I initially looked at the website with a browser but if you use the app the prices are lower.
The parts (Ridex) would have been £71:97 on the PC but £59:97 in the app.
Also the discount code CARUK gives you an additional 5% off.

I’ve left the original hoses on for now but I will look to upgrade them to braided hoses in a few months time, I think I’m going to get some new sliders for the rears soon and replace them too, it rolls nicely now rather than rolling like its dragging an anchor all the time, my next actual jobs will be replacing the thermostat and the centre pipe and manifold for more malian bits

You’ve said it exactly……’In a Nutshell’

I do most envy you your ‘hands on’ learning ….so cool

Thank you! I wouldn’t mind making fewer hands-on mistakes though…!
