What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Will she appear on Ru Pauls drag race - would fit in I think?

Watched the last series and it was ruled by the Scots! Go Lawrence Chaney!!

Appreciate it is not for everyone, but is surprisingly good fun!

It’s been for a service, an MOT and was taxed. Now looking forward to a couple of runs out in it

Made a decent start- fitted the wee door tweeters with a little ‘creativity’ to get them mounted on. The mid-bass speakers I got need to be sent back and exchanged for something with a shorter mounting depth but I did at least manage to apply the sound deadening sheets. Back to work tomorrow so the rest will have to wait for another day

I have been assessing the damage caused by a piece of concrete that fell from my neighbours’ roof onto my bonnet.
Could have been worse, 3 inches up and my windscreen would have been smashed.
Instead it is more scratches to touch up.

Ouch, hope their paying

They have only just moved in a couple of months ago, so I cannot claim they were negligent with the maintenance of their roof.
It had been fixed once by the previous home owners, badly, as it turns out.

Covered the A-pillars.

Nice.
The A pillars appear to be made of particularly hard and shiny plastic

Yes, and they are a particularly complex shape to wrap.

Neat job! - I agree the standard plastic is cheap and nasty…

I was wondering about that…

Did you use genuine Alcantara?

I once looked at using some on the seat of my 999 and found it was fearsomely expensive.

Do we know how how fade-resistant it is???

I’ve recently covered my A pillars and door handles in Alcantara. When I say Alcantara, it’s fake and inexpensive as the real stuff is a tad pricey unfortunately. I had my instrument binnacle done by a professional upholsterer which cost me £80 and is superb. The cost to do the bits I’ve done myself have cost me £15 in material and a tin of adhesive. The results are pretty good if I say so myself plus I’ve now done my Bro-in-laws binnacle on his MX5 and he’s delighted, so I’m happy that I’m doing a reasonably good job. The ‘Alcantara’ was bought from eBay.

I sourced genuine Alcantara for the upper dashboard from a German trader on eBay. It was the real deal as it had the Alcantara logo embossed at the edge. The trader appears to deal in remnants which makes it cheaper, however I tried recently to buy more but there seems to be a problem shipping it to the UK. I think Brexit might have something to do with that as I’ve found a number of European traders recently who will not ship to the UK.

I then found a UK supplier, AS Trim, but their product isn’t quite as good as the former, and doesn’t have the logo. There’s not much difference, but the German stuff had a finer finish, was thinner and stretchier. I’m thinking now I should have gone for Milano Suede as the description sounds closer to the previous stuff.

The colour I selected was Deep Black from Germany and Black 9990 from UK, both unbacked. There’s a slight colour variation between the two, as you can maybe see on the photos. The stuff from eBay is very black whilst the stuff from AS Trim is slightly purplish. It’s only really noticeable when the sun is directly on it, so not that often then

Useful - thanks…

I should have said that my fake Alcantara was a sq metre in total. I’ve about half of it left, so some other projects can be tried.

Took delivery of 5 litres of luverly Millers Nan-O-Drive full synthetic sump oil, new NGK sparkies and an OEM filter. A bit of a departure from the usual Mk1 oil pick, but recommended to me by a local chap who builds blocks for older track cars…and runs his own 1840cc supercharged Exocet.
So far, my engine still shows Full on the dipstick after around 2.5k “spirited” miles…so I guess the oil rings are not ready to crack. Yet.
This Friday the new engine tray goes on, plus a radiator flush and general ramp chassis check for the coming glen forays. I think I’ll get them to bleed the now 2 years old brake fluid while it’s in the air anyway. Be rude not to.

Changed the rocket cover gasket.

Reporting on whether changing the shifter gate has improved things?

After a couple of lengthy drives over the past few days I can say the change has eased, smoother, more assured.
Before it felt notchy between 1st & 2nd, still does when cold but when warm it’s much improved I’d say.
Happy the car at 75k miles is running sweetly after being laid up too long really during winter :+1:
