What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Replaced my suspension with Tein Flex Z coilovers and replaced the Mazda badges on the wheels.

Front wheel before

Old suspension, one of the rear shocks blew up last week (top in the picture)

After

Front after

Using it with the factory height and dampness this week and will adjust at the weekend, and get alignment done then give it a good clean.

Nearly got it stuck on a wet grass verge… not my finest hour! Cue swearing, mild panic, frustration and judicious use of second gear.

Here’s video with the sound of a man’s voice like he just got his head stuck in fence railings  REC_4805 nearly stuck earl sterndale.mov (had to enhance the audio so the engine is audiable over the wind and heaters. For context I was trying to get the car off the road a bit more because big farm machinery potentially has to pass, then realised I wasn’t really moving at all)

Changed rear drop links on my 2006 NC today after MOT fail.
Doing the fronts tomorrow.

MX5 technical guide , 14mm socket (17mm for replacement links), blowtorch and moleys were my friends today.

I also had some welding done recently. Rot both sides where sill meets rear wheel arch.

Went through a speed camera in Crewe just a few yards after a 50 zone. Think I was down to 35ish but expecting the worst :slightly_frowning_face:

Added some BBR individual throttle bodies and some door decals. I’m happy to report that it now sounds amazing!

If it’s your first offence you should get away with a speed awareness course :crossed_fingers:

I came out of 40 into a 30 and took my foot of the throttle before the sign. Camera van was around 10 metres past the sign. Generally they allow 10% + 2mph so 35. I was doing 36 as they clocked me.

On the plus side I did enjoy the speed awareness course.

Nugget got a thorough clean today, the kind you guys probably do every week…
I even treated the rubber seals with that body armor stuff, and cleaned the engine bay.
Air filter changed. Engine oil tomorrow.

I’m a bit envious.
Any chance of dropping me a DM to tell me what was involved?

Cheers,
Guy

Got it back from the garage today with nice new chassis rails welded in. Very neat job it is & will post up some pics tomorrow. Not cheap though so will be living on beans on toast for a couple of weeks. I supplied them with mx5 restorer repair panels but they didn’t go far enough so some extra fabricating was needed.

You might get lucky, I recently went through a definite red light at the dartford tunnel in my motorhome, I was expecting the worst but now about 5 weeks later I think j might have hot away with it! To be honest it has made me think about traffic lights more now!

Took my car into SGH at Bristol for a diff replacement as the the present diff was noisy and on its way out, drove along a bus lane on the way so expecting a letter soon.

Ha! Been driving for 43 years, it would be nice for it to be a first offence but ….
Only speeding mind you, 1981 was the first and 2 since, all marginal in my opinion but limits are there for a very good reason. How else can the Govt fleece the population.

It doesn’t have to be a first offence, it just has to be the first within a set period. I think it may be 5 years but could be 3

New chassis rail pictures. Should get another few years out of it now.

You should live in Bridgwater, stopping at red lights is. optional judging by the number of drivers I see going through them :astonished:

Changed engine oil and oil filter. A job not even quicker this second time around, despite my recent purchase of a trolley jack.
I am clearly no mechanic and now dreading doing the brake fluid and gearbox oil on the street…
But it feels good to know everything that goes in the car.

Hiya Christopher,
It’s good to have peace of mind. Not sure about your cars history and mileage, but if I was doing the gearbox fluids, while I’m there I would also tackle the differential oil too.

If doing the diff, make sure you can crack open the top nut before removing the lower one. No point draining if you can’t refill!

Replaced both front low beam bulbs, due to a lose battery terminal and a bump in the road (whilst following a police car at night!)

It’s a pig of a job and 1 of the fuse box bolts was seized/rusted solid.

H7’s are the bulbs for the NC1 if anyone need to know and there is a small black adapter that you need to keep from the old bulbs to put on the new ones.
