What's the best hat for roof down driving?

@SarahB if you go for a baseball cap, with your :100: Anniversary MX5 you can get one that will match your roof :joy::joy:.

I found a Viking helmet ideal but don’t do what I did and forget to take it off when you close the lid! You soon find who your friends are and which ones fall about laughing!

Alternatively, I found a diving helmet rarely gets blown off your head!

My kids recently bought me a Paul Smith baseball cap. It’s the best fitting cap I’ve ever had (don’t usually wear them because of the fit). It’s perfect for the Mx5

Baseball cap for me! I’m just on the cusp of being a tad too tall for my NB, so with the roof down it keeps the sun off and also stops my hair flying about like it’s having a fit! :+1:t3:

You would benefit from a flocked dash. It works a treat !! :+1:

I wear several hats, obviously not at the same time…
Baseball cap, flat cap, beanie, Tilley all without issues…not lost one yet :sunglasses:

Agreed. But how?

I’ve also been considering true matte black paint, but all those I’ve tried on test pieces are equally useless when compared with a piece of black felt. The dash surface is too smooth and it would still reflect. Polarised shades are a simple solution.

In two previous cars I fitted an appropriately shaped piece of black felt tagged on with stick-ums.

One MOT man was highly amused, but after driving the Vextra (with its daft pale grey dash) in and out of the bay on a very bright sunny day, he said what a great idea the felt was.

Alas, the first time I tried it in the MX5 the felt tried to depart.

Baseball cap for me.

Tilley hat for me , nice wide brim keeps the sun out of your eyes and off the back of your neck.

When I announced I was buying a convertible my brother bought me a flat cap- works really well except I’m often mistaken for Brian Johnson

Personally, I have used washing up liquid to remove the orange stains caused by sunscreen from my clothes. Obviously not in the washing machine, and with some elbow grease.

On the subject of losing your cap in the wind while driving I have one of these which clips to the rear of the hat/cap and shirt collar. No more lost caps.

Baseball cap from the owners club store for me.

Don’t like polarised sunglasses, I have found it hard to read the digits on some in-car instrument lcd screens and some stereo screens so all my sunglasses have RayBan G-15 lenses

Yep, I too prefer a Tilley - keeps the sun out your eyes and off the back of your neck, won’t blow away and comes with a lifetime guarantee. Also lightweight and ventilated
I’ve worn baseball caps in the past but find they make my head sweat terribly.
A further option is a “Buff” which can also double as a convenient face mask when you stop for a cuppa etc.

Also looks cool for the younger (or younger at heart) MX-5 driver :sunglasses: :+1:

Buffs are a good idea - I even have some from when skiing - may be a bit hot but will investigate wearing them bandana style. Thanks! :woman_with_headscarf:t3:

Ha ha - crocodile clips! Knowing my luck I’d plug into the battery by mistake … :electric_plug:

To be honest, I cant help but feel that when drivers use headwear whilst driving a cabriolet then you may as well not have one, and drive a normal tin top.
That said I also understand that people are sensitive to the sun. So for me…just my hair, and what’s left of it!
