I agree with StevieB.
Roof down motoring is about the wind in your hair feeling and since I gave up work I’ve grown mine so usually arrive rocking the Doc Brown stylee
I am glad your impressed. The colour match is spot on.
I bought it off Amazon
The colour is maroon.
PSB fan here too!
Personally, I have always worn something on my head as part of my outfit, way before I had a convertible.
The cap/hat/scarf comes on and off during the day, whether I am driving or not.
Saying that, despite my extensive collection of headgear, I have never found a hat big enough to ruin the experience of driving my MX-5.
Headgear actually allows me to put the roof down more often.
Personally, I do love the feeling of the wind in my (still quite ample - even at 66 !) hair - the tingle it gives at the roots is quite amazing.
However, I soon learned, when I got my first MX-5, that a baseball cap, to shield your face from strong sun, is a good precaution. Back in 2011, my wife and I took our first 5 motoring down to the south of France on holiday. Two days of spirited French motorway driving to get there, with the lid off of course, in glorious sunny June weather, with only a short-peaked English flat cap for protection, soon left my nose, cheeks and forehead bright red - even with sun block !
I looked ridiculous, and had to pop into a sports shop to get a baseball cap to protect myself for the rest of the holiday. Never been without one in the car ever since. But as is my normal practice to have the roof down even when it’s not necessarily sunny in Britain, I don’t always actually use it.
@MX51MJR Sadly they don’t deliver the maroon baseball hat to Guernsey
Baseball cap in the summer, Trappers hat in the winter.
I’m another Tilley hat convert, far better than a baseball cap as the Tilley will protect your neck and ears as well. They come in different sizes so you get one that fits snuggly so its not going to blow off, plus they have a back and front strap as well you can use just in you need a bit more reassurance, in case there’s a big gust!
Sombrero for me
Me too, it’s very comfortable and sweat free.
I have the Mash-Up (TMH55) sand coloured, bought direct from Tilley UK in 2015 for walking and gardening, and amazingly it has not tried to fly off in the car either (but I do use the straps just in case).
It has been through the washing machine quite a few times to keep up its appearances. After a quick reshape it always seems to end up looking like new. But it desperately needs another wash right now…
I can believe the lifetime guarantee.
They have more colour options now, after fading a bit (like my sand one has) this blue one would not clash with the car
You might as well leave the roof up in that one
I use a lightweight travel baseball cap from Millets. It has mesh under the loose covering and is cool. The wind blows through but does not lift it off. Plus I can fold it down pocket sized.
These photos show what I mean but it looks totally normal when on.
Don’t need too, top dollar rain or shine
Just a thought! We’ve all been talking about protection from SUNBURN, but don’t forget about SUNSTROKE, a mild bout can make you very ill, a bad bout can kill you!!! The head and neck really do need protection, that probably why old time farm workers, like my Grandads, always wore a hat and a neckerchief.
Despite wearing a hat outside, I had a case of something like that - heat exhaustion - when in my first year at junior school at Livingstone in the Tropics, almost in earshot of the mighty Victoria Falls.
My parents were summoned to take head-aching, fainting and delirious me home, and stick me in a cold bath.
However I had just enough awareness to realise we were about to pass the ice-cream shop, and raised a request. My mother being practical thought it would either kill or cure me, problem solved either way.
Sure enough five minutes later, cooled by the jumbo-sized sixpenny-mixed ice-cream and a chilled drink, I was right as rain. It was too close to home-time to take me back to school, and I still ended up in the cold bath for good measure.
Strangely next day, the long-time-broken drinking-water fountain in the playground was mysteriously fixed. No more heat-exhaustion excuses possible.
Well remembered Richard! I had a similar experience, not so much caused by the extreme conditions, but by my extreme childish obstinacy! “Put your hat on Roger!”, “I’m alright stop bossing me about!”. Sick, giddy delirious, “leave me alone so I can die” me, immersed in cold water to revive me. Not something I’d want to experience again!
Another Tilley hat convert here, I have several, not cheap but as with all things in life you get what you pay for. I used to wear baseball caps, but gave up on them as my ears and neck got burned, so a full brimmed hat is an essential for me now.
Marks & Spencer do a plain coloured baseball hat with a **sun protection built in, used it top down tour of central Spain with temp at one time 46 C and no problems, even on my thin skinned bald spot, they are cheap too I think I paid about £7
also works well in cold weather keeping the draft out the back of my neck
In recent years we have bought two of the more feminine Tilley hats, they have proved equally durable and comfortable, but look much, much smarter.
(The second one was cheaper at Amazon as in the link above, but check the Tilley website as well.)
