Wheel arch rust prevention….hopefully 🤞

I’ve had my mk3 for almost a year now, how time flies…
I did a lot of reading on what to look for and the problem areas and checked as much as I could without having the car up on stands or removing liners etc… and it seemed in good condition for a 12 year old car at the time… but low and behold after 4/5 months I found the dreaded rot where the sill meets the rear wheel arch, passenger side worse than drivers side…
So I had it to Steve at Yorkshire Car Restoration and he cut out all the rot and put in put in new metal… at the same time I had the underside treated with waxoyl to help things last a bit longer…
While I was there we went round the car to see what the rest of it was like and we noticed a few small bits of rust bubbling up on the inside edge of the rear wheel arches, but still 6-7mm from making it round to the outer surface, although it will eventually get there if left.
It was suggested that as a preventative measure what they do at YCR is to take back that inside lip on the rears to bare metal and treat any rust etc… they then also apply some protection behind the lip… the idea being that this extra protection prevents water from the tires getting at the edge of the metal that has no protection at all when the come out the factory…
To have all four arches done is around £350 so I’m thinking of getting this done to try and prevent/delay having new arches put in when the current bubbles of rust eventually make there way round to the out surface… and I’m sure if I needed just one arch replacing and painting etc… it would come to a lot more than £350…

Is this something anyone has had done or had something similar on their 5…?
To me £350 doesn’t seem that bad even if it just delays the inevitable, but I also don’t want to be throwing money away as such….

Have a read here…

Thanks Mick, good write up :+1:
