Where are you taking your MX-5 in 2026?

That you haven’t been in one before?

We’re going to Northern Spain and Portugal which will be the longest trip so far.

I know several Italians, and they would tend to agree with that.

But they also say it keeps them on their toes, and no chance of falling asleep at the wheel, so they are among the safest drivers in Europe.

Also the variety of road surfaces is another factor, from superb grippy smooth tar to abysmal potholed concrete along the same road, regardless of back country or town or motorway.

The way they calibrate the speed of light is the time it takes for the horn behind you to sound from when the traffic light in front of you turns green.

And at some times of day, quite a few road junctions have traffic lights which are “Advisory.” Snag is those junctions are not always marked as such.

Fifteen and seventeen years ago I enjoyed winter driving in Italy, mainly in the Dolomites, lovely local roads, but dreadful motorways seemingly under continual repair. At the time France, Switzerland, Austria and Germany were so much better. Things will have changed since then.

Caveat aurigarius.

Then you must visit the Edradour, and take the tour.

It is a great visit, unfortunately they didn’t take people in 2025 due to difficulties in staffing, hopefully this will be resolved in future.

Good suggestion, thanks. Are they peaty? I’m more of a tripple-distilled WhiskEy kind of guy, TBH.

Annan (near Dumfries) distillery was a good visit last year.

We drove down to Italy earlier this year and didn’t have a problem with the drivers. The only slightly scarey day was on a motorway bypassing Milan. And that was really due to the number of lorries around. It felt like you were in a video game! Just go and enjoy the experience.

Thanks for the reply, wife really wants to go to Italy, it is definitely on the cards

Portsmouth to Bilbao on Brittany Ferries. San Sebastián , Ainsa, Andorra, Zaragoza, Pamplona, Bilbao. Mostly 3 nights in each with a couple of 2 nighters. Lots of driving in the Pyrenees!

We book apartments with a washing machine so we don’t have to take more than 3 days worth of clothing. Lightweight, quick dry, non iron kit is your friend with a couple of decent shirts for a good restaurant visit or two.

Italian lakes and Dolomites are a must!

I’m heading to Berneray going roughly the same route in April in my Eunos v spec! Trying to go to all the islands.
