Where have you been in your MX-5 today?

Why? We live ‘at the coast’ and do not have any issues. Intrigued, North Yorkshire.

File it under change of circumstances, 3 garages down to one and a project already under a cover on an over populated driveway.

Quick blast through the twisties, Helston to the Lizard. Cross country through single track
( please, please don’t have anything come the other way)
Goonhilly Downs/Gweek/Rinsey/home. Top down just about doable.
Surprising amounts of traffic; I thought everyone would be comatose this afternoon…

Off down to Leicester to see my brother today. I’m not in a rush, so I’ll avoid the “M6 & A50” route from Manchester, and drive down in the MX5 through Buxton and Ashbourne. It may take a little longer, but it will be a lot more fun!

I drove many thousands of miles at night previously and used to enjoy driving at that time - not had to of late, as I’m now retired. Recently drove to Bakewell for a family gathering and it involved a drive home to Cambridge in the dark. The satnav took me ‘cross country’ to the M1 just south of Chesterfield and it was a nightmare drive in my MX-5 RF. Everything coming towards me seemed to have blindingly bright lights and even worse every other car was an SUV or pickup or 4x4 who seemed determined to put me into a ditch or wall. They always seem to plant themselves in the centre of the road and never reduce their speed. With the number of potholes peppering the edge of the roads how long before I hit a deep hidden one and destroy a wheel/tyre?
The experience has now resulted in thinking twice now about using the MX-5 for driving at night - either take my other car (a Volvo estate) or consider fitting an LED lightbar to the Mazda!!! :high_brightness: :high_brightness: :high_brightness: :high_brightness:
Anyone fitted aux driving lights to an ND other than by replacing the grille?..

I’d do that and still get some moron deciding to park right next to me… :exploding_head:

You would have been better taking the A6 from Bakewell to Derby then taking the A52 from there to pick up the M1.
Have been on these roads at night, partially lit along the way and of course mainly A roads.

Christmas trip to Hebden Bridge yesterday and then a Boxing day trip to Silverdale. It got really foggy on the way back but it made for some great sights…

It was a case of following the satnav - it was dark and I was on unfamiliar roads. I’ll know better next time!!!

Leek to Barnsley via The Roaches, Longnor, Crowdicote, Bakewell etc…
Great day for the top down

Once it’s dark I drive on full beam continuously. I’ve never done this before but getting temporarily blinded by LED’s is serious.
I don’t dip until oncoming traffic does. It’s my first aggressive driving behaviour but I can’t be doing with being momentarily blinded at any speed.
So far so good. You have to live with being blinded to some extent as most other cars are tall these days and are adjusted for oncomings that are much the same.

I too leave dipping until the last moment and usually flip back to main as soon as the oncoming vehicle is alongside - with the idiots on bicycles at night, wearing dark clothing and no lights, the chances of one hiding in the dark around here is just too high.
There are some reports that vehicles that are being fitted with LED upgrade bulbs are the main cause of these incidents of badly aligned head lights but they are a tiny part of the problem IMHO (if at all). All the instances I have encountered have been new or newish vehicles. Even walking the dog at night in my village the glare from dipped LED headlamps is noticeable, even more so when it is followed by an older car with halogen lights. For some reason Teslas seem to suffer from glare more than other makes…
Drivers often praise LED headlights, but wait until they get the bill for replacement of one when it fails - up to £2000 depending on make of car!!! I had to fork our £180 for a replacement LED brake light cluster on my Volvo - as opposed to a few quid for a replacement bulb on previous Volvos!!!

I have a friend in Germany who’s 2015 A6 headlight got damaged in a car park incident, the scratch is pretty minor, personally it would not bother me but, he is going through the other parties insurance. When Audi can find one the bill will be a mind blowing €3,000 plus fitting !

Had to have a fix as hadn’t been out yesterday.
Huge side winds and driving rain affected the MX not a jot as I drove down to Penzance. Apart from taking too much time to defog, despite the air-conditioning, I’m loving driving in wet conditions.
Having driven my formative years on motorbikes it’s a whole new world to discover how much fun you can have on wet roads without ending up on yer @rse!

@AT I wonder what the ND lights cost?

I just had a look on MX5 Parts

Headlamp, With AFS, RHD MX5 Mk4 £1042 inc vat, £1100 for the left.

Yikes!

Careful top down drive for a chat with Dave :slightly_smiling_face:
30 minutes later driving the opposite way a three car pile up on a road I’d just driven down :person_facepalming:t3:

Been a bit stay in the Garage time - went and gave the 5 a C-Tek hook up - been around freezing here - saves a flat battery, when the sun next shines. :sunglasses:

We were planning a drive out today (shopping and breakfast trip) to Ashbourne, have cancelled so keeping the car tucked up in the garage. Too many reported accidents around us today, one has put a hole in the wall of the local social club. Also two roads we may have used are under water (river Trent) so are closed. Not using an MX-5 of course, still haven’t got one.

Just a six mile outing today to Tesco and back. Roads were proper wet so happy to push on. It’s those half wet that look a bit greasy that cause me to dab my brakes before the next bend (something I hate in other drivers)
