Took the MX5 this morning when I drove across Manchester for my regular RoSPA Advanced Drivers gig. A fairly short drive, but long enough to put a broad smile on my face!
Less than a hour today. Sunday often throws up stuff that is more interesting than the usual news so too much time putting the world to rights-on the I pad.
Didnāt get out until the light was fading.
Roads dry mostly but damp under trees. Iām a timid car driver because I used to ride bikes in the wet but am slowly getting used to getting a bit of G-force on wet roads.
Tried a local cafe we had not been to before. The orange lump lowered the tone but the coffee and sticky bun were good!
Same thing happened to me at a stop on the Horse Shoe Pass on our way to Llangollen.
He was jealous because he couldnāt take his roof down
Today must have been national tractor day. Spent a third of my drive behind one. Had one seven mile drive through the twisties with nothing other than my self-preservation instinct to restrain me.
Iām still a tad too slow. You get a section where it just works because, for whatever reason, you just went that little bit quicker than you intended. Roads dry and still no squealing tyres. Maybe Iām driving like an old lady and just donāt realise itā¦.
Havenāt heard the term āsticky bunā for ages.
Did the same route as a couple of posts up today. Absolute blast at times. Roads were not dry and not wet. Still too slow but got a couple of combination of bends that I got a huge buzz off. Still accidental unfortunatelyā¦
Took the NC around a few local garages as Iāve recently found out the rear sub-frame is doing its best impression of a block of swish cheese, every single place I visited said āNahh weāre not touching it in case we run into problemsā , āYouāre best just scrapping it and buying something newer that isnāt an mx5ā and one place half-jokingly (I hope) suggested it get āstolenā and using the insurance money to get a better car.
Unfortunately (or fortunately for the wee NC) Iām a stubborn so and so, so Iāve been talking to a mate who knows a guy with a scissor lift in his garage and weāre going to have a proper look at it ourselves, and if it isnāt horrendous source a decent sub-frame from somewhere like mx5 city or the like and do the work ourselves.
I would do exactly the same, and even if it is horrendous in other areas, with the subframe removed, a decent mobile welder can get you out of trouble.
There are replacement subframes around for the price of a decent exhaust. The rear isnāt a huge job to replace. There is a video of it being done on the pavement kicking around on this site.

Found an excuse to do my Penzance/ StJust/ Penzance circuit again. Mostly unimpeded. So a great drive. Sunday drivers are an actual issue but none met today.
Lover in Wiltshire, pose by the sign and then off to the village hall to select our Valentineās card and post them in their unique Post box.
Iāve given you a āloveā . Very appropriateš
Coincidentally enough Iād literally just finished watching that video before came on here and saw your reply. Iāve got a mate coming over in the morning and weāre going to put the car up on a couple of ramps so we can get a good look at it and figure out what I need to buy so we can get the car sorted out again.
I was pretty miserable about it especially after the negative comments from the garages I spoke to but after doing a bit of research Iām a lot more optimistic and determined not to let this be the end of the wee NC (which has now been christened āGrotbagsā by my ever supportive wife)
By the time spring gets here itāll be back on the roads and since Iām going to have the rear end apart it makes sense to upgrade the anti roll bar, bushings, coilovers and put new brake lines etc in while Iām at it.
Helston/ Lizard/ Culdrose/ Gweek. Then repeat the last two circuits as itās an interesting bit of road. Great drive with little traffic today.
You can always spot the locals as they hardy hold you up much. The lizard is on a peninsula and is about ten miles from civilisation so even yer average Joe in yer average car is very familiar with this rather nice bit of road and drives faster than you would expect.
Only managed to overtake twoā¦
One bonus on this little loop is a a place that sells eggs. As I flashed by I thought I saw two egg boxes. Great excuse to do the same road backwards and scored twelve eggs for Ā£2.50. True half are a little small as they are from Bantams but a fine day outā¦.
Lovely familiar place names. One of our friends used to own a cottage in Porthleven back in the day, we visited often. We also used to got to a brilliant place called Pratts Market in Hayleā¦is it still there?
Was in Hayle today as itās a nice road from Helston. Yep market still functioning and just as cranky as ever.
Judge the tide right and you can walk from the Quay over three miles on sand to Godrevy and get lost in the extensive sand dunes known as the Towans. Lots of goodness in a small area!
Visit to Vincentās for Anaās service and he very kindly leant me his own NB for the day. What a sharp driving car this is!
Just like i remember it!
