Compton Abbas airfield fir a classic car day
A neighbour told me of a small cars and coffee meet this morning on the edge of Needham Market. By the time I arrived, the field had started to thin out, but quite an eclectic mix on show. One couple turned up in a helicopter - how flash is that?
The big car is a 1948 Packard New Yorker Highlander. Believed to be the only one in the UK.
Day 1 from Berkshire to Windermere. Avoided motorways and stuck to a and b roads.
They love their speed cameras up here ![]()
Uneventful other than getting stuck in hell aka Halifax. Popped over to Ribble Viaduct for a piccies on way through. 295 miles done today.
Loving the Chrysler! ![]()
Along the coast to Cullen for a fish supper and Portsoy on the way home for an ice cream. Gorgeous evening.
Lovely part of the world (I lived in Forres many years ago), apart from Cullen Skink!
We had a sunny day trip to Ribble Head the other day.
Looking forward to following your road trip north. Enjoy ![]()
No, can’t be doing with that. Tried some at the Baxter’s soup factory a few years back.
Set off to go to Findhorn along the coast but changed our mind as the sea mist rolled in and didnt look like shifting. Headed inland in glorious sunshine to Grantown on Spey for lunch and then through the delightful Glenlivet estate to Dufftown and along the Cabrach to Rynnie and home to the sea mist again. Great day.
Despite being geographically opposite I always do a CS if I come across cheap smoked fish. The smoke rather than the fish is the thing as long as it’s white fish. A kipper doesn’t qualify😀
Had a short run today to see if my complete change of suspension is an improvement.
Day two and we are near Oban. We had issues with directions from Windermere, so ended up on the M6 North to beyond Gretna, headed to Dumfries, to Kilmarnock, Paisley,to skirt Glasgow and headed up the A82 loch lomond Then the A83 towards Oban. Another 250 or so miles in the pot. Magical mountain views and fabulous driving roads. Even managed 49 mpg.
And is it?
The cheapo Meisters. Not my first choice but, £350 BNIB they had to be tried!
Day 3 and a small issue … We travelled from Oban to Mallaig to catch the ferry to Armadale. To find when we got there after 80 miles, I have booked the ferry the wrong way round and there was no spaces until Friday ![]()
So, back in the car to Fort William and then we headed to Skye by car than boat. We crossed the Skye bridge and was very busy with bikes and motorhomes. We ventured up the main A road which was fine but we were heading up the ‘circular’ A roads to do a lap. That was just a killer with massive potholes and a war zone. We turned back and headed over to the Skye bridge and onto Lochcarron.
We managed 320 miles today, so the longest day so far and roof off all day again. Tomorrow we actually start the NC500 as staying at Kishorn, which is at the bottom of the Applecross Pass. Wish us luck ![]()
For me today it was a run to Oxen Park (I had to look that up, as I always call it Oxo Park), for a drink at Manor House.
Then back via country roads.
I’ve had to wait two and a half years to drive this car again, and this sunny weather has really made my first week behind the wheel a very enjoyable one.
Strangely, I remembered Nugget being all nimble and quite light, but the first thing that hit me when I first drove again was how solid and well put together he is.
And how that body moulds around you.
Aaaah, bliss!
Even a trip to the supermarket is marvellous with the roof down on such a gorgeous day, then back home for a BBQ.
Day 4’s installment ( if people are reading this ?) we started at Kishorn for an early start, so we could do Bealach Na Ba and Applecross Pass. We were so lucky in only having a couple of cars on the main drag up. We stopped at the top , next to a lady with a drone. Said she was a youtuber and had followed us up with her drone. She has promised to email me the clip when she has edited it.
To think it not scary was wrong. Huge potholes and motorhomes on the Applecross Pass part was pretty nervy going.
We then travelled the NC500 to Ullapool, with a few stops for pictures, lunch, fuel and ice cream.
We now are in the most amazing pod to stay tonight and this is the view
150 or so miles today
Tomorrow we head to Durness
Hope you get the drone footage. That would be so good to add to your holiday pics👍
