Rewind about 40 years. Iâm driving through RAF Waddington in a BT HA Bedford van with an apprentice in the passenger seat. Sergeants mess car park was totally empty and covered with snow and ice. We couldnât resist. Donât know if anybody saw us doing doughnuts for half an hour but we didnât get called into the office and it was bl00dy good fun.

Another quick after work drive to Newgale beach to test out my new alloys and ps71âs I had fitted on the weekend. another good road and beach right on my doorstep here in pembrokeshire
well, according to GoogleâŚ
Coton in the Elms is a village and parish in the English county of Derbyshire. At 70 miles (113 km ) from the coast, it is the farthest place in the United Kingdom from coastal waters.
âŚanyway, still surprises most people as we generally think our island isnt that small
Apparently l, the ND engine runs a 14:1 compression ratio, a lot.
With 95 0ctane, the ecu retards the ignition according to the knock sensor in order to prevent pre ignition.
With 99 octane fuel, the ignition is retarded a lot less, if at all, meaning more power.
According to Paul Roddison, who has measured a standard ND on a dyno, the difference is an instant 10 bhp, using Shell V Power.
Since buying my new ND in March, I have only ever filled it with super dooper unleaded and it feels good, but I have nothing to compare it to.
To the wholesalers. Wrong car, as it turned out but right car if you know what I mean. Donât have a photo of whatâs in the passenger seat & footwell but had to put the seatbelt on to stop the blasted thing beeping.
It is amazing how much you can get in the boot. I called in to a garden centre at weekend and easily fit 3 100l bags of compost in the bootâŚ
Went to Morrisons this morning for beer - fyi, a 10 pack fits perfectly in the lower recess width of the boot, bought 2, could have accommodated 4 / 5 slabs!
Just taken daughter to Dental Hospital in Sheffield, car now completely filthy from all the dirty spray off the Parkway / M1 so thatâll be another chance to give her a bath this weekend (weather permitting)
Good top down run over to Sheffield Arena for 2nd Covid vaccination. Really well organised with no queueing and hopefully fully protected in a couple of weeks.
OK, Iâm really surprised at that, I thought it was approximately 100 miles from here, guess that is as the crow flies?
Thanks for the info.
Cheers Tony
A return trip to Blackburn, to go car shopping with my partner.
Having the roof down despite the intermittent rain made the motorway miles less boring.
Another week and another scenic, top down run to Aldi - Getting low on the essentials like beer and breadâŚ!
Rob
I think you should limit yourself to only buying 1 or 2 essentials each time you go, then you have an excuse to go out more often
I used this practise more during lockdown when an excuse was needed! Though even when an excuse isnât needed, it still remains the logic to MX-5 drivers everywhereâŚ!
I find myself volunteering to go to the take away or anywhere really to get a drive.
Also there are a couple of main ways to work;
- the short 20 minute drive down the main road and the motorway or
- A 35 minute journey down country roads and 1/3 of a mile along the motorway
When it is not raining I only use option 2 - 3 days a week!
Also when I went out at lunchtime to go to the sandwich shop (hood down both ways - less than 1 mile!) I parked it in the undercover car park when I got back to the office as it means that if it is not raining when I go home it will save me from having to put the hood down on a wet car and then get sprayed as all the standing water on the car blows off. 5 minutes ago it was hammering it down!
MX5 ownership, if done properly, is not just having a car to drive, it takes careful management to get the full benefit!
And the sun is out again!
Think itâs rained every day in MayâŚ! So messes with my driving and keeping her clean routineâŚ! ![]()
Rob
I agree - very frustrating. Keeping the car clean is a nightmare.
We have a cherry blossom tree on our drive which looks great, but all that blossom covers the car when the petals drop. Last night I jet washed the cars on the drive and they looked perfect and this morning guess what - yep covered again⌠doh. So before I left for work I had to get the hose out and quickly rinse and leather the car before putting the hood down and getting to work between showers.
A never ending task.
My neighbour has the very same, but in his back garden thankfully⌠My back lawn covered in the stuff, but MX-5 out the front unaffected!
Is never easy when your car is your pride and joyâŚ!
Rob
