I have a mk2. 5 and I will wave to all 5s starting tomorrow[{]
Well seems like a good response to this thread…
In its honour I hearby declare Saturday 10th January to be:
National Wave at an MX-5 Day!
I propose a 3 Point fixed penalty and £60 fine for anybody failing to comply!! [:P]
I think i was a bit dazed! it was(and still is:)) the honeymoon period for me and my 5!
I have waved a few times since though and never had a wave back! but i shall endeavour to try harder in future:)
Cheers
Ben
Saw 3 Mk1’s yesterday and none of them waved. I was tempted but not used to my 5 yet so was busy concentrating on driving. Give it a week and I’ll be waving at everyone!
I always wave, in fact I’m waving now!!! ~~~~
National wave day must be working, first MX-5 to acknowledge me ever. I took my blue Mk2 for a run & BRG Mk1 flashed today 12:30 at Hornsea, even before I waved. Those pop up lights look good, almost wish I had a pair. I tried a Mk1 before I got my Mk2, but when I put the lights on the kept going up & down by themselves.
I remember when I got my Fiat Seicento Sporting in yellow, all Cinq/Sei sporting owners (particularly yellow ones) would flash or wave - I used to love it! But those cars are dying out, and in the last few years I noticed that the owners still left rarely responded to the waves/flashes anymore.
Since getting the 5 I thought I’d be back in a flash/wave culture (with other MK1s at least!), but alas people seem reluctant or confused most of the time. I’ve not yet had a wave back. I think it may be because a lot of the owners are just people who were chuffed to pick up a cheap convertible, but don’t really know anything about it…
I don’t know… I’m all for every type of person enjoying this car, but I do think that the wave/flash is precious. Its like a sort of private handshake thing - a tacit acknowledgement of a shared secret. It is saying “Yup, I know too…”. Someone above called it ‘a bit MG-ish’ - so?!? All that means is it is old-fashioned and polite - and again, its just a way of pleasantly acknowledging a shared passion. “Yup - I don’t want an Astra either”.
Its all part of the experience, I think. So I shall continue to wave to all 5s (I have also done the ‘2-eyed wink’ with the popups!) regardless of response or lack thereof. Maybe people will start to get the idea.
I wave - and sometimes they wave back.
I am known for riding round with the roof down and all kinds of drivers comment to me - 4x4s and all sorts!
Unfortunately I need new tyres at the moment, so am not likely to back on the road before tuesday.
By the way, I have a Mk2.5 and I envy the pop-up lights on the Mk1s.
I have always waved, if you get one or two back out of many then thats great. At least you and the other driver are having a good time.
When I had my first one i stubbornly waved on my way to and from work each day until after months I had tought the same couple of 5 drivers to wave back
The 5 is a fun car to be driving so i wave - I dont care what the non wavers may think.
I always try to wave and flick the pop-ups when encountering another Mk1.
I have found that Mk2 2.5 and 3 drivers (and female MK1 drivers) rarely seem to wave back, so I am less likely to initiale the wave to them now.
I have also found myself waving at MK1s whilst driving the Picasso
My Mum used to own an MGB and always used to wave - and generally got a response back. I tried waving at other 5 drivers when I first got mine and usually got a look of surprise/astonishment. But some drivers are more aware though. I was in Argos car park once and as I pulled in and parked, there was another 5 behind me in the same colour and the driver gave me a knowing grin, which I returned. I think its just that because there are so many 5’s on the roads, there are less enthusiasts and more “motorists”.
Oh joy another MX-5 waving thread…[8-|]
Are all 5ers miserable at the mo?!
Obviously… [8-)]<Miserable old … mode on>
Pardon me for expressing an opinion…
Yup that’s me - well not miserable just very bored with ‘why doesn’t any body wave at me’ posts.
They have been done to death and the same explnantions offered before - principally a lot of other owners don’t reallt get the MX 5 thing, to some it is just a car - the reason they don’t wave back or first is for the same reason that Vectra owners don’t wave at each other nor do Mondeo owners.
These threads are in the same vein as ‘why don’t some MX-5 owners drive with the roof down’
again done to death…
<Miserable old … mode off>
I waved at a bus driver today… just one finger though
Repeated threads are to be expected on any forum - new people join and want to chat about stuff that is old hat to long term members. Nothing wrong with that, lively chat is always good. :o)
They also remind those of us that love driving our cars but rarely see another 5 or at least one that waves back that there is a sense of shared community on the road as well as the forums.
I started off waving when I first got my car and then stopped when nobody waved back at me, these repeated threads remind me that if I want to do it I should do it for me and not for an anticipated returned wave…which is even more appreciated when/if it is.
I’ve been waved at once, by a fellow 2.5 driver and it was great to share a smile as we passed one another…I for one will go back to waving[H]
What? Who? Where?
The roof goes up?
Who told you this hideous lie?
Waved twice today (much to the dismay of my fiance “Oh god you’re so sad!”) Nothing back… Not a sausage. They were both of the fairer sex though, sadly I think only the ladies of this forum appreciate the 5 [:^)]
As is the use of a forum search facility…[^o)]
Though of course the threads I’m refering to are in the ‘old’ place so won’t show up.
As I say just expressing an opinion the same as you.
