I thought it was illegal to drive an MX-5 with the roof up:)
Seriously though, if it’s not raining i always drive with my hood down. I don’t know about 2/2.5/3 owners but the heater in the Mark 1 is a cracker and on winter days you can have the top down and feel as though your driving on a warm summer evening…even when it’s minus five outside and instead of a chin spoiler you need a snowplough fitted to the front of your 5 just to make it to the end of the driveway
I remember when I was new on the old forum and several old moaners made similar comments about using search before retreading old themes - I thought it was a nonsense then and I still do: the number of responses to this thread (including your own - if you were that bored by it you could have just passed over the thread rather than sighing so publicly) indicates people still love having a gossip about this one. There’s no such thing as a new subject by now, and this new forum seems I would say to be full of fairly new people who are excited by their new toys and can’t wait to chat about them. Good on them! The idea that someone should have something to say but worry they should run a search before they dare say it in case it’s been said before is, in my opinion, at odds with the reason most people are here.
Ben, the heater in the Mk3 is not as powerful as the Mk1 - which as you say blasts you with the fires of hell even in the depths of winter - but it serves well enough to enable keeping the roof down, and the heated leather seats work well too ;o)
Just the same as the threads about is my stick on plate legal, can I remove the cat on my '90 MX5, how old are you all etc…the forum is a living thing and people come and go, and strangely they need answers to questions, sometimes a bit frivolous, but hey that’s life. On the old forum I was one who said occasionally, look at the search etc, but I’m more tolerant now. This new forum has attracted a lot of new names and faces which can only be a good thing…lets give them some encouragement instead of moaning…
As a former mini and beetle owner i all ways wave and flash at other mx5s but only twice have i had it returned once by a black mk2 and a red mk1 driven by a rather nice looking lady. I think that Most 5 owners just dont get it.
For some reason in the past week I’ve seen quite a few Mk1s out and about. Most did not return my waves/popup blinks. But 2 did. The first was a guy in a green Mk1 in the Twickenham/Teddington area.
The second was this morning, from a very very pretty girl in a sparkling white Eunos, which had smart wheels, a third brake light on the bootlid and an unusually-shaped hardtop. I’m not sure which of them was more attractive…
Hmm… just struck me that she may be on this forum. That would be good.
What can I say - I’m a sucker for a pretty girl in a sports car…! [:$]
Guy in a silver Eunos with his hood up on a sunny day
I had my roof down and looked behind me and did some crazy thumbs up routine…like dancing on ice using hands. The other drivers must have wondered what was going on ha ha!
I used to own a Dolly Sprint, plenty of waves with that. Later I ownwd a GT6 again, plenty of waves. After the wedding monster had caught me, I bought a Triumph Spitty, waves galore. Now that the kids are older and the main car is a Euroblob Vectra Estate, I bought my wife a ‘5, back to waving again! Since Sept 08 I have been waved at many many times up here in t’ north, quite a few from other '5 owners and quite a few from 4x4 owners who seem to be mouthing something to me as they try to join the front of their car to the rear of mine. Now that I have learned the secret 4x4 wave, I often return it complete with the silently mouthed, one word question “Do you work in the banking industry”. [:D]
I’m sure people will be glad to know this topic has recurred a number of times over at MX5.com, with similar postings.
I for one miss the friendly wave, which I have got used to after 15yrs of TVR ownership. It is the enthusiast versus the ordinary driver thing, I’m sure, but what attracts the ordinary driver to buy an MX5, which is much better than ordinary!
