That is lucky. I don’t really know about the secrecy, but having worked with Japanese client in my role in the past I can say they (my clients at least) value ‘honour’ very highly so it might an attempt to save face. However that doesn’t reallly work in the Uk when we want to know what’s happening!!
I’m still fine running my GT86 for now except it’s needs a service/MOT and tax on May 30th!! (Looks like I will have owned it exactly 10 years when I trade it in)
That’s called ego here.
Kind of like someone pulling out on you and not apologising. ‘Saving face’, as to do something like apologising after deliberately pulling out on you would mean a bruised ego and a public announcement that they’re ‘wrong’. Can’t see why people’s egos are so fragile. Heck, nearly everything I’ve done in my life has been wrong lol
Placed an order for a new MX-5 on Saturday — really excited to get hold of it. At the time, the salesman was fairly confident it would be with me before the end of the month, but said he’d confirm on Monday.
I didn’t hear anything back, so I chased today and was told there’s apparently a hold-up in Bristol, possibly due to a recall or something similar. Bit disappointing to go from “end of April” to now potentially looking at early June, especially without any real clarity on what’s going on.
Not the end of the world, and I definitely don’t want to cancel the order — just a bit frustrating when you get your hopes up for a quick turnaround. Fingers crossed things get moving soon!
So a salesman said he was fairly confident you’d receive the car by the end of April…
Despite stating you’d get confirmation on Monday (presumably after you’d paid you deposit and set the ball well and truly rolling). You didn’t receive this, but had to chase it up.
You’re then informed, after paying your deposit and setting the ball rolling, that April won’t be happening (pretty much), but more like June.
Man, can’t believe sales and a dealership would follow a pattern like this. Never in a million years would you think it
Mind you, for balance, compare and contrast to 3 or so years ago, when folk were waiting a a year +
It’s hard to believe, but it seems that some dealers are simply not aware of Mazda’s quality cock up and subsequent decision to hold all new MX-5 arrivals at Bristol.
Note that I did start this thread and cancelled my order last month with a view to then looking for a low mileage pre-reg or ultra low mileage ex-demo car.
So, after scanning the ads on Autotrader, I contacted a fairly local dealer earlier this week and asked about the brand new Homura they’d advertised (whether it was in stock or “on the way”). The sales manager then rang me and said they could get me a car for end of April (sounds familiar eh?), but would speak to distribution and get back to me!
Well he didn’t get back to me, so I contacted them again, only to be told the same old story… no MX-5s will be leaving Bristol until the recall work has been carried out. Hmmmm.
He then asked whether I wanted to place an order!!! Erm, let me think - NO
I did mention early on that I’d prefer not to take delivery until the first week of May at the earliest, as that’s when my current finance ends. That said, it seemed like the dealer wasn’t aware of any recall at the time — after speaking with his manager, he came back asking if I’d be willing to take the car by the end of April, which I assumed was to help with their month-end targets.
Or, knowing salesmen, it might well have been 100% to help you. Targets and money probably had nothing to do with it, but an innate desire to see that you’re happy and in your car sooner, as what makes you happy will make him happy. I doubt sales targets and money had anything to do with it. Not in car sales. It’s far more benevolent than that.
Ah, that makes sense. This is actually the first brand new car I’ve ever bought — I’m more used to spotting one on the forecourt and driving it away a week later!
Does anyone know anything new about this? I spoke with my dealer last week and he said it still says end of April on the order ‘but to take that with pinch of salt’
Must be 20 years ago when I had to wait months for a Volvo V50 company car because “they’ve put the wrong engine in the latest production run”. I suspect it was the Euro 3 to Euro 4 transition but I spent 3 months in a demonstrator S40 T5 with 226 bhp so was sad when it eventually turned up.
