Retro and budget home hi fi

I sobered up Keith Moon by pouring a couple of buckets of cold water over him!

And you can still hear?

We were almost behind them well off to the left side (20 feet?) and almost at stage height, Bristol Anson Room 7th Dec 1968. It was amazing how far RD threw his mic out into the audience, and still got it back in time for the next phrase.

I permanently lost the top 4KHz of hearing, but met my future wife.
You lose some, you win some.

“Tommy (sorry Richard) can you hear me?”

If I turn Magic Bus up to not quite distorting on the now old Z906 surround system, then yes, and feel…
As can our detached neighbours.

If I play “My Generation” up LOUD my neighbours look at me…sympathetically! :anguished:

Right in front if the band, the speakers are to each side of you, so you don’t get the full power.
No, it was the Scorpions who did for my hearing.
As I knew the drummer, I had vip guest tickets and so was sitting in the centre a few rows back. This meant I did get the full power and they were a seriously loud band - probably a macho thing.
My ears were ringing like crazy as I was leaving and it took some time for the ringing to subside.
My top end hearing loss is now described as profound and I have terrible trouble hearing what anybody is saying in a crowded situation. I have to try and work it out from the every third or fourth word I do hear.
I wonder how many people have had their hearing wrecked, on that night and all the other such nights.
I resorted to hearing aids this year and asked the technician whether I should listen to music with or without them. Good question, he said, the answer was probably with.

You have my sympathy! Mine’s pretty shot! More that a couple of people and it’s a wall of noise. TINNITUS!!! And hearing aids do not deal with that!

Now I know why so many want loud exhausts…
so they can actually hear them…

My hearing dropped from 21KHz to 17KHz that weekend.

OK then for several decades, but in January 2020 it suddenly dropped to 10KHz, and my balance also suffered if I moved my head! Try doing a tumble turn in the pool when disoriented by inner ear, impossible.
The pills help with the balance, but I still only hear up to 10KHz, even with all the tubes cleared out.
The Doc also mentioned a word “ossification”, but after looking up its effects, I’m not convinced.

Oh well. At least I can get a delivery slot from Waitrose.

No they don’t cure it but I think they may just help a little.
The head of an ENT department once told me there’s a theory that tinnitus was caused by the brain trying to substitute for sounds it no longer hears.
The hearing aids do help to put some of that sound back and my tinnitus does seem a bit better now

Thanks for that. I did a test and all that happened was the amplified sound triggered my tinnitus and made it worse. There are different types I understand. Sadly a guy I vaguely knew who was a drummer and got a type of tinnitus that couldn’t be countered committed suicide because the “Noise” in his head was incurable and unbearable.

That’s awful.
Luckily, a lot of the time, my brain is able to filter the tinnitus out, so I’m not constantly aware of it.

Me too.
Police broke my door in during Bab’s O’Riley to come in and hear it properly.
I missed the door bell…

So, took a short trip out today, not in the 5 but in Mrs B’s Audi. Went to pick up another record collection. Got this one for nothing! :grinning: a set of ‘Albums’ from Readers Digest and World Record Club! I’m sure not to everyone’s taste but for zero cost, I’m not complaining! :+1:

Some boxes have slight damage on the corners which I’m sure I can sort but the records themselves ( after a quick check) look almost unplayed!

Some have certificates, some have booklets, some include advertising, vouchers and even discounted stylus offers! The best one, believe it or not is the
Wonderful World of Sound from Max Bygraves!:grin: only one record is his in the album, the other 8 records are original artistes from 60’s & 70’s which is brilliant!

Almost 80 individual LP’s. :+1: eventually I’ll work my way through them all! Only one warped LP that I’ve found so far, due, I reckon to them being stored flat :unamused: not bad overall. When I got there, the chap didn’t want anything but I gave him £20 anyway, so he threw in these as well!

I think I did very well in the end. When I left, the chap admitted if I hadn’t collected them all, they were going to the tip! :open_mouth:

Anyway, I’m pleased, definitely more than Mrs B anyway! :grinning::grinning:

After moving them into the hallway initially, I then put them onto the dining table for closer inspection. 80+ LP’S are quite a weight and I managed to leave two albums behind!!

Anyway, they’re all up two flights of stairs now, stored vertically in my LP storage unit! They fit perfectly in one ‘cube’, one LP wide by one LP high! :slightly_smiling_face:

One of my favourite, non-R&R records from 1959 was “The Honeymoon Song” by Manuel - and the music of the mountains (aka Geoff Love and his orchestra). Still got it, still play it, still love it!
