Undersealing at MX5 City in 2020

Curiosity killed the cat and all that. But how old is your car if you don’t mind me asking?
Looks like I am going to have a good look under the liners etc in the spring. Mine is 2013.:+1:

It’s a 2006, just shy of 70k. I’ve always kept it garaged though, probably explains why there’s no rust anywhere else to be seen.

I reckon you’ll be alright with a 2013, IIRC they really stepped up their game with rust prevention on the 3.5’s and 3.75’s

I’ve not seen any evidence to support that, the MK4 as well doesn’t come any better prepared from an under seal perspective even if over time some of the base materials might hold up better.

Ah okay… I was told that by a friend so I have no direct experience to be honest!

I find it amazing that Mazda haven’t upped their game in this respect, more so as they must be aware that they’ve got something of a reputation for it

Only in markets where we treat the road with the toxic sludge we do here, in a large part of the world then not such an issue.

That and it’s usually around 10 years old or so that crustiness makes a public and unwelcome appearance by which point it’s an old car and the manufacturer would hope you’re into your second or third new sale by then.

There are plenty of other manufacturers products who suffer the same…

My treatment shown in this thread, caught it before it turned into something nasty.

So, another quick update… Went to collect the car this morning… And its staying there for another week.

Various things are wrong with it… The side skirts aren’t properly secured, there’s patches everywhere where they’ve missed bits, there’s loads of overspray everywhere including my newly refurbished alloys, there’s a massive bit of chipped off paint inside the arch which wasn’t there before, they’ve somehow managed to chip loads of paint off my brake calipers somehow and overall its blindingly obvious that the whole job has been rushed and done poorly.

Not to mention the state of the interior which they haven’t even bothered to valet out… There’s muck and dust and ■■■■ everywhere… It was pristine when it went in.

So I’ve refused to take it and told them I’ll be coming back on Friday and it had better be immaculate as it was when I dropped it off.

To say I’m not happy with them and disappointed would be a mild understatement. They even told me that the guy was working on it in the dark until about 7pm last night… It explains the poor workmanship… It looks like Stevie Wonder did it.

Moral of the story, their mechanical work is good… That’s all they should be used for.

🤦🤦🤦

My god that is truly appalling given the fact you discussed it all with them.
Such a shame they couldn’t really be bothered.
I would have to question the ability of the mechanical work for the future and would find some where else now.

Yeah I must admit I’ll be reconsidering what I use them for in the future.

Though I don’t think there’s many other specialists near me in West Yorkshire.

The state of that seat.

I just use a trusted independent garage for any work as an MX5 is just another car at the end of the day. :+1::slightly_smiling_face:

Tell me about it… I cannot even believe it.

And guess what else… For the pleasure of all this, my bill is £750 plus VAT… :face_with_symbols_over_mouth::face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

I would be telling them to have sex and travel!!

I basically have… I’ve told them that when I go back next week I want it up on the ramp and I’ll be going over it with a toothcomb… It will stay there until they get it right!!

That is atrocious, standards have slipped even further than when they did mine, Where they had undersealed my car it had good coverage and the car was clean when I picked it up. However based on my experience I would definitely want to see behind the wheel arch liners.

Yeah I’ll be having a good poke around everything when I get chance

Hi C,

My heart goes out to you, I feel your pain.

The only positive is that when others read this they will perhaps seriously consider investing in some equipment and time to do the job themselves. It is not rocket science, it is messy and time consuming but you will know exactly what has and what has not been done.

Thank you for sharing your pain on here, I hope it is helping. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome next week.

I took my car to the usual MOT garage here in Derby, it was a council run garage, bus depot actually. Very popular with car owners as they didn’t do repairs just MOT.
This one time I collected the car and I was horrified to find a big blob of grease on the seat. Not just a small mark but it looked like someone had dipped their hand in a tub of it then just wiped it over the seat, it had got down the edge too between seat and centre console.
It was cleaned off by them but I had to do a proper job when I got the car back home. Never used them again, that was after years of good service of MOT’s on whatever car I happen to own during that period.

A grand??? Blimey, what is their hourly rate?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience on this post. It’s a real eye opener.
