@ast You could be right but my experience has been that their quoted prices don’t bare an similarity to what the customer ends up paying. Hence the reason for the caution earlier in the thread.
Even if there had been no extra work undertaken it wouldn’t have come as a shock if the price was higher.
@NathanEastham MX5Restorer have their own YouTube channel which gives a great insight into the organisation and the people. It’s worth a watch.
HTH
Cheers.
It has always been my understanding that if a company gives you a “quoted” price they are legally bound to that. They can give a quoted price with a clause for parts that may be needed. (Or extra work).
An estimated price is far to risky and personally I never accept estimates before any work is started. Be that cars, house, building or whatever.
A good company will know what they are doing and should build that into the original quote.
MX5 City would know where the risky bits are and have a quick look BEFORE quoting.
They have been careless, sloppy and abused the customers trust in all respects.
I feel this subject will rumble on and quite rightly so.
Hi Nathan ,yes I used the mx5 restorer in June this year to get my sport black fully under sealed , while they had the car there they also fitted IL Motorsport anti roll bars supplied by myself for me.They had the car for four days , done a first class job all round total cost was £504 would highly recommend them. Regards Bob.
Good spot Saz. This once happened to a wheel arch on my NC when I was having the suspension geometry done. In my case the metal exposed was clean and totally free from rust. The garage had just been clumsy taking the wheel off.
@Scarletpimpernel Yes, you’d think that wouldn’t you?
The straw that broke the camel’s back for me was the price on the website of £600-£900 , a quote of (once you were already on-site, ready to go and more unlikely to reject it) £1300 and a final bill of over£1400!
When asked why it was so much more I got a blank expression and the promise that Martin would call me to explain everything. Never heard from Martin surprisingly enough.
I do note now that the website has changed.
There is no longer a quoted price but a guide of between £1000-£1800.
All I can say is buyer beware…
Hhmm, they make one mistake and you’re offski…
Like Cpt_Carrothers I took my Mk3.5 to MX5 Restorer in May 2018 for a full underseal and cavity wax - including sub frames and suspension arms which cost £360 inc VAT. It was very clean so any preparatory work would have been light. They had the car from Mon until Fri and I was completely satisfied although I’ve only ever inspected it visually. Still looks perfect though. Reading the tales of woe above makes one feel very fortunate.
And of course their attitude to dealing with their mistake, it didn’t go down too well, as if I shouldn’t have said anything.
The MX5 restorer are first class, top professionals and also enthusiasts, they realise their
work represents their reputation. I travel 100 + miles to take my NB to them, professional work done and peace of mind for me…
Mods, can we please stop this thread until MX5 City have had a chance to resolve the problems to ChrisMK3’s satisfaction? It’s become a witch hunt.
Do MX5 City ever respond on this site. For a company that lives on the back of MX5’s I’m amazed if they never input on the site.
I disagree, this isn’t a witch hunt.
We’re all here to share experiences to ensure we’re all getting the best quality regardless of what we’re having done.
I’ve stated that the car is still with them and will remain so until I collect it on Friday. I’ve been very clear with them with regards to what I expect upon collection, and I’ll be reminding them of that on Wednesday for the avoidance of doubt, and if they fail to act upon that then so be it.
I will report back again truthfully and evidentially. Equally, if they resolve everything to my satisfaction I’ll also report back.
I know the owner of MX5 City reasonably well, to the point that on Saturday when I went to collect the car, they needed their courtesy car back for tomorrow morning and so he personally drove me home.
I’m beginning to think that rather the garage being poor overall, the chap who specifically did the undersealing to my car is actually a bit ■■■■ and doesn’t take much pride in his work.
Based on the conversation I had with the owner on Saturday I wouldn’t mind betting he’ll be getting a bollocking tomorrow morning… Nonetheless, the actions of one don’t speak for all and they’ve got a fair chance to remedy the situation at this point.
Aside from that this thread has served me well in identifying other MX5 specialists who I may seek work from in the future.
Everyone talks, and words travel fast - any business that forgets that does so at their peril.
We all grown up adults and all entitled to say what we think and believe within the forum rules based on the evidence available.
That is one of the whole points of a forum!
We don’t need to be told what to say and what not to say by specific members and certainly not gagged by the moderators within the forum.
MX5 CITY should NEVER have even contacted ChrisMK3 to say it was ready let alone think he would take the car back in that condition.
Are they that naive to think that a “FAIR FEW” of their customers are going to be MX5OC members and not comment on work and service provided by them?
We certainly don’t need the minority ruling the majority again…
Thanks all for your time and look forward to what MX5 City say and do about the car.

Definitely not, this isn’t a ‘witch hunt’ its simply people discussing the frankly appalling job that MX5 city have done, as we would… on a discussion forum… designed for us to talk all things MX5…
If a job is worth doing properly, then do it yourself!
Re the images: The rust chip was there before but just not visible, the rest is shocking. I don’t think they have even bothered steam cleaning before spraying something at the car.
If any members want to borrow my roll over frame to do their MX5 for a small fee, just PM me.
Where abouts are you??
Hello Chris
I am near Wokingham.
Iain
Curiosity killed the cat and all that…
Just thought I would share with you all an “Estimate” even though I asked for a “Quote” from South West Rust Proofing for my MX5 NC.
I thought rather expensive considering what others are paying?
Obviously could haggle regarding whether I need a Courtesy car etc etc.
Also have the very long waiting time.
The MX5 Dinitrol kit comes out at around £100 and maybe another tin of this or that.
A confirmed DIY project in the spring I think.

It would be interesting to know what the one year warranty covers?
Bit like warranties on rust repairs. MX5restorer warranties against MOT failure within 3 years, which is not the same as rust appearing,
