What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

If you can yes please id like to know. Thanks in advance

I took all the sound tube kit off and took out the bulkhead fixing.
Put some strong tape on the rear cut to size to act as a gasket.
Filled the hole with foam, taped the outside and used self amalgamating tape to secure.
Then bolted back in place. (Might get a suitable end cap in due course).

Found a flat 90 degree 3 inch bracket (in the garage) and bent/cut to suit, drilled one more hole, and painted. Fixed using mounting as picture, ( existing holes already there).

Although the pipe is 2 inches, I bought a 1.5 inch end cap, (don’t be tempted to get a 2 inch one it’s too big). I still have the 2 inch one.

This ones better.

Job done. :+1:

Nice, do you mind letting us know how much it costs?

That’s a neat sound delete tube modification, far better value of course than my purchase from MX5 Parts but the kit is now reduced to Ā£81.90. That’s still expensive for what it is but it did cost over Ā£100 anyway bought now.

Thanks. The problem is this pipe though. I think the extra bit thats blanket out it might interfere with the aftermarket brace.

But i will have another look today if i can do something similar.

Thanks again

Roger that. :+1:
As we all know, you do one mod which leads to problems with other parts, (exhaust was my headache and no pun intended).

I had the same issue… used gaffer tape on mine… it stops the ā€œclatteringā€ sounds.

No news (or pictures from mine yet) How does the car handle now with all the underside braces fitted?

Hi mate. It rained in the morning but cleared up and was decent by lunchtime and I did manage to get a run today but I haven’t really gone mad with it just yet. Honestly I don’t really think on public roads one can tell if there’s a difference. I’m toying going for a trackday to Anglesey tbh.

I can definitely tell you one difference. My car on stock mazda sport springs and i hit an empty coke can when i went over it. So if any have their car lowered they are in it for a surprise from that central cross stiffening part. :joy: The rest is fine.

My suggestion is to take the old bits home just in case

Are you saying the X brace is too thick ?

Its definitely thicker than the stock pressed folded sheet metal OEM part that replaced. Its perhaps thicker for a few reasons. The whole point is to sustain (or add) rigidity and be as light as possible if compared to the OEM stock part. Its made out of aluminium box section so it kinda needs to be due to material choice / design / purpose

IL-Aluminium-Strut-Brace-kit-3

So I cant really say whether its too thick but its definitely thicker.

I’m lowered on Ohlins. I put the cross brace on for a bit of fun before driving over to Pevensey. Caught it on a tiny speed bump at local services. If you saw the state of my road (unadopted, shingle/gravel with loads of potholes) you’d laugh and wonder how I haven’t already ripped the underside off my car.

Time to get the tractor in and level it again, methinks.

I’m weak. I’m now booked Anglesey on the 17th April :joy:

Japfest the week before (albeit its a 20 min stint at Silverstone), Donnington in June and again in November with Mazda on track.

Should be good fun :sunglasses:

I was thinking about speaking with Paul Roddison about these but i don’t really want to reduce the ride height of the car. I’m not really sure whether for me anything other than the stock suspension would make any difference but fitting stiffer rollbars would reduce a bit of roll during tracking.

Anglesey is a fantastic track! Have fun! :racing_car:

Yea never been but always wanted to. Donnington is my closest proper track and although i really like it one need to expand their horizons innit :joy:

Caldwell park is another one I’d like to have a go but not with my mx5, it be a cheaper track car that i wouldn’t mind to have a bend or two

Mmmm. I’m looking for a short ā€œshakeodwnā€ session on track. Nothing too demanding. Was thinking of Blydon.
Anglesey might be worth looking at for a few days break.

Donnington is my fav. always avoided going to Cadwell in my Scooby days as I didn’t want to bend it. Bedford is a fair location too…but quite pricey.
