What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Sun out, roof down, a few polite waves/honks from MX5ers enjoying themselves.

Not a random trip out, but to get this beauty fitted today. Subtle and understated, in my opinion a great improvement. The drive back quickly confirmed it was absolutely the right thing.

Good chat with Jack from Royal, quick and very well made and fitted! Well impressed.

Removed the rust from behind Sport Black drivers side repeater.
Ready for inhibitor and paint.
Nothing was showing but after sorting out the number plate light rust issue on the boot, I had a feeling this would be the same.
Passenger side repeater all good with no rust!

I printed a cover for the battery to tidy up the engine bay a little. Might redo it with a slope to match the fuse box lid shape.

Here in the UK yestereday was Sunday - a holy day for Christians.
Twas also a holey day for my Mk3 in the usual place - rear wheel cill area.
removed some more rust and so enlarged it so that it is on the bit facing the trye and underneath.
Bad, but not too, bad!
Is already on the waiting list at my specialist MX5 restore/repair place to do their surgery and will be sorted early Sept.
Better than NHS waiting lists!

I would be removing the arch liner to see what’s behind there too, both sides👍

Good idea MickAP - did that after the photo. Fortunately, all looking good.
Will do more prep work - plenty of time for investigative work before the repair for me to “dig” deeper.
Gets one thinking - is it worth undesealing if the water gets under bits of it and rusts away in secret.
Would one be better removing it all and cleaning and coating every year in AquaSteel or some such???
After all, tis almost a 15 year old car - so due some care and attention.

About 2 year ago i took off the arch liners and treat the rusty bits. Also worth removing the back box and heat shield and treating all the underfloor with rust converter before underseal of your choice. I used a Dremel tool to grind away the rust back to bare metal where i could.

That’s this years plan - to get backbox off and the cover and do underneath the boot floor as there are lil bits of rust on the inside of the boot floor. Also the rails
Lat time I thought I was thorough BUT, as we all know, it’s not really the outside bits that we shoudl worry about - it’s the cavities!!

Replaced the rear exhaust box on my new NC. It was far too hot really but couldn’t resist.

Fitted Formotiv caps to the wiper arms of my NB

After chatting with Luke he designed the script to my spec. The caps cover up the exposed nuts and although it’s quite a subtle mod I think they look very smart.

Couldn’t check the front chassis rails as it has covers fitted.

When I bought the car it had a strange strap around the battery. Finally got round to fitting a battery clamp sourced from eBay.

That strapping would have just served as a way of lifting the battery out of its position. They were fitted with a Panasonic battery from new. Guessing previous owner discarded the clamp, can be an MOT failure (or advisory) without said securing clamp
To complete the set-up re battery you have a cover missing, these were fitted as standard below, although not a necessity.

Battery Cover, MX5 Mk3 3.5 3.75

I thought that it might be a lifting strap but the battery has a handle on it so I’m not sure why it was there. It was an MOT advisory that led me to it. Hopefully all good for next year!

Had a little detailing sessions. Copper red loves the sunshine.

I did the very smelly job of treating the underside of my ND with Lanoguard. A friend recommended it and I’d seen a few ads online for it so gave it a go. Very easy to apply and time will tell how good it lasts but by god does it pong.

Just applied so still shiny

And after a few hours it’s turning to a satin finish, the heat certainly helped

Looks like a neat job.
