What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Think that should be DILLIGAF. Took me a while but I think it’s Do I Look Like I Give A…

Did you make this part up yourself. I’m intending doing the same & have ordered the mesh from Amazon, where did you get the filter material from?

What exactly does this part do. I have the 1.5 nd. Bit confused by this mod.

It’s a “sound tube” that takes induction noise and pipes it in4o the passenger area of the car so as to get some “sporty” sounds in the cabin.

Some like it, some don’t so take it out with a delete kit or home made version.

Not sure if it’s fitted to the 1.5 engine.

I didn’t like the sound so fitted a delete kit and a Cobalt exhaust. Much better, in my opinion!

GOOD NEWS! The fob works fine after its little swim! Thanks for the good vibes and prayers that undoubtedly helped!

Yesterday I changed the engine and gearbox oil, few panels and a chassis brace to remove. I always prefill the oil filter before installing. I changed the sump plug for a standard plug. The gearbox requires 4½ fills of my pump before leveling and any excess draining out. Stuck a temperature strip on the gearbox so I can see how hot it gets. Also gave the gearbox scoop a quick touchup of black paint.

All good stuff, and your engine bay looks lovely. As well as pre-filter, I hope you smear oil on the rubber sealing ring. If you don’t you’ll struggle to get the filter off again. Interested that you use Amsoil 0W-40. I use the standard Mazda 0W-20 but it is expensive. I do use Amsoil GL4 in the gearbox because it seems to be important to use GL4 and the genuine Mazda oil isn’t available in the UK. Incidentally, one of the best tools I’ve bought is the cup-shaped filter removal tool from MX-5 parts which exactly fits the Mazda filter. I struggled terribly with several other tools but this one makes the job a doddle.

Been servicing my cars for many years so yes always oil the sealing ring. In terms of engine oil Mazda use 0w/20 for fuel efficiency reasons and i would recommend a 0w/30 C3 low saps oil to help reduce inlet valve fouling. For the gearbox im not sure it has to be just GL4 any more, as more manufacturers are making GL4/GL5 specification oils.

A job I’ve been meaning to do for a little time on my Mk1 (15 years)…

My passenger electric window has been running slow since I got the car, it packed up all together last year, so in my efforts to get to know my car better, I stripped and cleaned up the terminals in the switch, took out the regulators and runners, cleaned and silicone oiled them them and now have a serviceable passenger window.

I’m now pretty confident in doing the other side in half the time. I think I’ll actually do them both, as I’m sure I could have done the passenger one better, so will spend a little more time on that one.

Only one pic, as I was too busy enjoying myself!

Electronics must be improving :grinning:
Planned to give Bullitt a good old spit & polish over Easter
But the Combi-Boiler decided it wanted it’s own Holiday w.e.f. 9 pm Thurs
Emergency Engineer repaired am Good Friday
Just about to retire for the evening and heard ‘Drip, drip, drip’
Boiler leaking all over the floor
Including 3 inches of water in a bucket I have my hair-drier, hair crimpers, hair smoothers
Couldn’t Believe It…They Still Worked after Soaking :astonished:
Unlike the Combi-Boiler…which is Under Warranty & now must be repaired by Manufacturer
Who of course don’t work Bank Holidays :rage:
No heating/hot water [sorry Bullit]   :face_with_spiral_eyes:

@Bullit2005, I feel your pain. That Good Friday we had with the glorious weather, everyone enjoying the sunny weather with tops down, I too was wrestling with my combination boiler. We saw pictures posted of scenery and loveIy views, this was mine .

Needed a bucket too

Our boiler man told me Oct 21 your boiler is out of warranty next year, remind me to replace the gasket on the tank, forgot the actual term/part he used. I said why’s that then, he said these may give way on the gasket after 6/7 years. It’s a Worcester Bosch greenstar combi.
October 22 he came and replaced said gasket and did the service. He showed me the gasket as it came off, it was about to give way all split and perished. The bill for service and gasket replacement was £102. I certainly dodged one there with future grief and maybe a larger bill.

Totally Concur re Worcester Combi
Had one installed in last home I owned and it only got a bit poorly once in eight years !

[My circs changed and now in rental…Landlords use Vaillant…this has happened before…de ja vu…previous model went down between Xmas & New Year …if I was a Conspiracy Theorist ]

Think me Landlords have a ‘Cunning Plan’ [Claim under Warranty & Tenant gets a brand new Combi]

And Drat…unlike MX51MJR the new Combi comes with Even Less Access to folk like me…

[Lets open that up and see if I can fix myself before bothering the ‘experts’]

Was it your gasket??

Unfortunately he’s striped all the Warning Notices from the front of the Combi and didn’t leave me any paperwork [which for some reason repair folk have stopped doing…not giving me a paper copy as it’s all gone on line]
BUT from Memory with the Vaillant it’s usually the pressure pump
His tiny handwriting reads like 'o.v. or q.v. or d.v. ’ replaced
Sorry…I was more focused on him advising me on whether his works had affected my controlling the Digi Thermostat as mature non tech savvy person more used to a dial thermostat

Yep…we sensibly have the same black bucket :grinning:

“Leaking Diverter Valve

Yep can disable the boiler.

My last boiler (24 years old) wouldn’t switch over to heating (valve problem) but the heat exchanger was solid and basically had its day. No spares available and definitely not economical to repair if parts were available.

At least it’s all sorted.

Had all sorts of problems with British Gas service in the past. For example -

If a boiler needs more than £200 of work they class it as ‘Beyond Economic Repair’. So if they do a repair that costs £190 including labour and your boiler is then in perfect working order they will not do anything else. Yes they will continue to charge you your monthy instalments for ‘full peace of mind cover’ but ring them with a minor faulty and it’s tough ****, we ain’t coming. They will of course offer you a discount on fitting a new boiler but even with the discount they will still be dearer than anyone else. If you have a trusted local plumber then contact them. British Gas sub-contract out to the lowest bidder anyway.

The other ploy is that they can’t repair because ‘parts are no longer available’. This means that the only supplier that they use hasn’t got any probably because they don’t stock any parts for boilers over a few years old. However put the boiler model and part description into Google and you will find everyone and his dog have them in stock.

Can you tell I’m not a big fan?
