What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Yesterday…bought her.

Well I took the wheel off, took a look at the brake assembly and put the wheel back on. Too complex for my skillset so will book it in to get done properly. Besides it’s our wedding anniversary so off out to lunch shortly.

Straightened the steering wheel whilst fitting the body coloured trim. Tidying up the stone chips, never done this before but feel compelled to do so.
After applying the base coat what do you guys use to flatten the paint off before applying top coat and laquer?

I’m going to have a crack at flushing and changing the coolant over the weekend. Got myself a few bottles of Deionised Water and a Wynns Rad Flush.

Got the expansion tank off the car and soaking in some hot water with a dishwasher tab in it to hopefully get rid of some of the rusty looking mess thats in there.

I know theres a LOT of debate on coolant for the mk1/NAs, but does anyone know if the below coolant would be okay to use once the system has been fully flushed?

Don’t have access to specialist suppliers or anything so my local Halfords is the only place I can get to!

Very fine wet and dry . Just needs a light go’ing over before the top coat .stone chips we used cocktail sticks for the small chips on second hand cars when i was working for a main dealer.

Thank you, so many small chips arghh.
So its a pearl white metallic, do I flat them off then add the pearl white and laquer and flat off between each coat?

Rather than using cocktail sticks for touching in stone chips I use these. Sold as cotton earbud cleaning sticks. Fine pointed cotton tip. Tighter weave than cotton buds. No big drips creating paint molehills.

Changed the engine, gearbox and final drive oils.
There was a tiny bit of deposit on the gearbox and final drive plugs but nothing excessive.

Collected my car from C&C Sparkes, Bisley. They fitted the carpet set I bought from Newton Automotive, and the correct colour lower dash I bought on ebay to bring the car up to the correct SE spec.

Looks superb. Great colour combo.

As an aside, anyone know if there were there any NB editions with red carpets, door cards and lower dash?

Swapped the Mk 1 1.6 alternator , crank and water pump pulleys for the 1.8 , from a V belt to using a multi rib …

Looks great. So this car was heavily modified and you are making it ‘stock’?

I had a 1989 BMW 3 series project like that, but the car was so heavily altered that the costs of restoring it just mounted and I sold it onto someone else to finish the job.

A worthy project though.

Trip to get this the other day. Really pleased with it
