Royals??
Yes indeed. Delighted with how it looks and feels.
Clean and wax, first time using bilt hammer double speed wax, very impressed. Brought the red out nicely. Momo wheel and boss installed, so much nicer than the standard rubber wheel. Although Iāve managed to get the horn to only work when the wheel is turned not at centre, the mx5 life.
I was going to grease the slider pins but the pads are wearing equally and the sliders all felt very smooth when I took the calipers off and worked them in and out, so I decided to avoid the risk of tearing the dust boots and left them for another year. I did the brakes with brake cleaner and cleaned the insides of the wheels while they were off, so it wasnāt all a waste of time.
I replaced the nearside rear lower wishbone big bolt, which itself was a new OEM bolt. The nut would not go nicely down the thread, so had to be replaced.
Normal weekend clean - just attacking panel and panel gap weekend by weekend. But itās becoming something Iām really happy with
We held a Tech Day at the weekend courtesy of one of our local members. Lots of underbody inspections, thankfully nothing too unexpected for anyone.
I changed the gearbox oil ( Millers Oils EE Performance MTF 75w Gear Oil) which has made a big difference from the last oil that was in (not the OEM).
Rotated the wheels too to help manage tyre wear evenly over all four.
Interesting day, then. Can you explain in what way the Millers has made a big difference and what was in before after the OEM?
I changed from OEM (which is unobtainable in the UK, it seems) to Amsoil GL4 (I wanted to stick to the spec, which is GL4, not GL4/5). At first I thought there was a difference but I am not so sure now. I am following the advice from those who know to change the gearbox oil annually.
Local garage who races NBās sourced the specific Mazda oil for the diff and used Comma 75/90 for the gearbox (which is in spec according to the general āif you canāt get the Mazda specificā spec), which I agreed to. Result equals notchy when cold and overall not as smooth as before and not liveable with.
Cue more research and discussion with a knowledgeable local owner who also spoke to Millers Oils on the topic, the recommendation for an ND with difficult change characteristics is the oil listed above. Result now is a super smooth change where 1 - 2 - 1 in stop/start traffic is not a nightmare.
Thanks, Ian. Very helpful. Mine (mid-2017) is not one of the earliest gearboxes so, hopefully, it will last, but I do have a bit of the 1-2-1 roughness in the changes with the oil I am using now. I will try your recommendation next time.
Ian When i worked for a main dealer we used commar oil. At the time Esso supplyed the oil to Commaā¦ Not sure about now.
Interesting, mineās early NA and Iād assumed those problems were unsolvable first-gen teething issues with the design. I replaced oil and parts as well, which madeā¦ some differenceā¦? Not a fix. Canāt find an order now but whatever I used was probably something along the lines of Comma, wonder if I need to try again with something else.
Interesting, I tried Millers EE 75w/90 in my gearbox and found the gear change wasnāt that good. Changing it to Millers CRX 75w/90 NT+ made it so much better. There is a lot of variability in the build quality of the gearboxes with sloppy clearances/bearings, so gear change quality wouldnāt be the only thing I would consider, and a multi grade oil would be my choice.
Steering wheel arrived from Royals this afternoon so just been and popped it on along with spoke trim that I took off and painted gloss blackā¦ almost finished tarting up the interiorā¦
Big recommendation for Royals too, quality is fantastic and exactly what I wantedā¦
Lighting not great on the new one but a quick before and afterā¦
The real mystery is why Mazda donāt make their own recommended IS gear oil available here. Their diff oil is readily available.
Nice set of Mtec slotted and dimpled front discs plus new pads fitted, all pistons and sliders greased . Nice run out to a NT and 40.1 mpg as brakes no longer dragging
Bonus.
Iām guessing the Dyslexic Kingdom ?
The silver Jasper Conran Mk2 had red carpets, seats, and door cards.
