I would like to know how to do this - having to scroll through ever-changing UI elements using the thumb wheel seems stupid to me. Imagine having to operate the rest of the car’s controls in that manner. Utter rubbish. Please help me restore touch screen functionality at all times.
end of project build
Upgraded the indicators on our RF to full LED all round. Thankfully, no hyper flash! Front bulbs were changed to these units.
They are a lot brighter than the OEM bulbs.
Sides and rears are sequential. Quick video of everything working.
After 2 years of ownership finally got around to fixing the air-con…just in time for winter
Fixing how??
Do you have a link to the front indicator bulbs you purchased? Thanks.
They were these ones, Paul. Apparently have the necessary resistors built in to avoid hyper flash and are canbus compliant. Certainly worked for me as the photos and video bear out.
Thank you.
You’re welcome!
Just remember to inform your insurance company, because this upgrade will count as a ‘modification’ to the original spec. Your insurance may be voided if you don’t tell them.
Insurance declaration for retrofit LED bulbs is a potentially interesting area.
What did they say when you asked to declare them?
Luckily, there was no impact on the premium, but knowing insurance companies these days, they will happily take your cash, but will look for the slightest travesty when you took it out and employ that to the limit when paying out for a claim. So best to tell them. These days, even a ‘go faster’ sticker on the car counts as a mod.
I bought my Mk2 in September 2022 and it was serviced by the garage I bought it from. Anyway after ordering a complete service kit from MX5parts.co.uk today I began the service. With the front of the car up on ramps, space was still very limited underneath. The engine sump plug was on incredibly tight but finally loosened. Whilst seeing to the oil filter, a moment of inattention found a pint of black stuff on the concrete drive. The oil filter was another ■■■■■■ as the previous garage chappy had done it up far too tightly. I had one of those cup-like oil filter removal whatsits and needed a ratchet on it to get it removed. Off with the plug leads and out with the deeply buried spark plugs. The old ones were Bosch Super 4 FR78X with four electrodes - never seen those before. The air filter was replaced although after 6,000 miles, the old one was in good nick. On watching a couple of YouTube videos (see MiataMods - brilliant videos) I discovered I needed a special hand pump with a squeezy bulb in the middle and a pair of platic tubes to fill the gearbox and rear diff, to get the new oil into the filler holes - about £6 in ebay so one on order. Still quite a satisfying few hours and at least I know I haven’t over-tightened anything.
Sorry, where has this come from? Do I have to declare my MX5 owners sticker??!!
What about my valve caps that the club gave me??
You can find out more here…
I’m worried about my stubby aerial now.
Too right, I don’t know how you can sleep at night with that level of guilt hanging over you. How will you be able to face your family when you are imprisoned and declared bankrupt for your blatant disregard of your insurers simple and clear rules!!!
I wouldn’t bother phoning the insurance company to say i’ve replaced an orange flashing bulb with another orange flashing bulb. That just seems a complete waste of everyone’s time.
As long as the new ones are the right colour … I would like to change my OEM incandescent indicator bulbs for LEDs purely because (good ones) are less likely to fail, and they probably give a brighter light too. One can imagine a situation, though, where the driver of a car you’d hit claimed that you were not indicating. That might lead to scrutiny of your indicator bulbs. I’d need to be certain that a replacement was road-legal before changing mine. Good LEDs are great. There’s plenty of rubbish around, though.
There is also currently no legal framework to approve retrofit LED bulbs, so there is no way to make them road legal. You’ll notice the packaging for any of these will say on it somewhere ‘for off road use only’ or ‘Not ECE R37 compatible’ which means the LED bulb doesn’t comply with UNECE regulation 37 (which covers automotive lighting).
However. Assuming the LED bulbs are the right colour and neither too dim nor dazzlingly bright, The MoT tester will not fail you for it, and nor will the police bother you, even if they stop you. About the worst case scenario is if an LED bulb failed and an accident happened as a result, then you’d probably be found at fault for the accident.
