What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

After a proper shampoo and clean last weekend, I applied some ceramic sealant to my ND1 this morning.

First time I’ve tried doing so. It’s come out reasonably shiny and polished, tbf

Going through the car and checking as much as possible ready for our NC500 trip on the 7th for 11 days. You always think you have it done and sods law something happens you missed. Today is actually the first anniversary of owning the mx5.
I will hopefully send daily photos of our journey . It’s taken 5 years to get there.

These scratches on the boot lid had been bothering me, as well as a bird poo etching just out of shot.

So I gave the car a wash, fallout remover and clay all round. Over the past 5 months, the defects have been masked by PoorBoys BlackHole and the car’s been protected by Turtle Wax Seal and Shine.

I’ve got a basket of new detailing products waiting on purchase but in the meantime, I wanted to see how what I had would work on these scratches. Using a Chemical Guys Green Hex pad and M105, then a Lake Country Orange pad with M205…

Not perfect but a greatly reduced. I’ll be doing the rest of the car in sections over the coming weeks. There’s not a huge amount of scratches, more just marring and swirls that really dull the Sparkling Black Mica paint.

What are the tyres on your car please.

Poly bush install ?

Some steaming… hence why the pictures aren’t that clear.

I was gonna ask the same. Looks like these track day tyres?

How’s that working out on the roof Ian? I’ve wondered about using my steam cleaner on it before.

It’s pretty good and ready for a coat of a protector.

The steamer is particularly effective for cleaning that bottom seam where the hood joins the body and a layer of gunge builds up over time.

Good shout - I did an initial hood ‘spring clean’ the other day, so will add this as a follow-up step. Thanks :+1:

Got my summer wheels back on.

The winter ones were a bit mucky when I got them off, but the prep work I did in waxing them before I fitted them in November paid off, and the dirt came off the winter wheels very easily.

So, that’s just in time for the North West group’s “Back of Skiddaw” drive through the Lake District on Wednesday, which I’m looking forward to!

Incongruously clean caliper on remarkably dirty wheel - but it’s all back together and all works (I THINK!).

All straightforward enough, however despite thinking I was well set up to swap the brake line over, the banjo bolt takes what seems like F O R E V E R to tighten up and stop dripping! It didn’t help that my torque wrench is really a bit too big to fit in the available space, but I got there in the end.

I used a Visibleed kit to bleed the caliper; basically a tube with a one-way valve on the end and a catch bottle. It seemed to work far quicker than I expected, so I ended up pumping more than necessary through it to be sure, but I have a pedal and it all feels good. Some cautious back-and-forth on the drive and all appears in order. Now I just need to bed them in, but that will have to wait for another day.

You may notice everything is wet; despite using cardboard under the work area, there was a bit of brake fluid, cleaner, etc. on the ground by the time I had finished. I pushed the car back and broomed it down with some floor cleaner, then rinsed well. We have cats, and it seemed like a good idea to clean down as much as possible so they aren’t exposed to anything nasty. They aren’t all that interested in the cars, but I did have to shoo the big fella away a few times when he came to QC my work…
