What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

I’ve done that and also put my hands round the inside of the rim to feel for any nasties and cant see or feel any nasties so it is probably leaking from the bead so I’ll get a tyre shop to take the tyres off and clean the rims up see it that sorts it, but i think the tyres on the rear at least aren’t too long for this world

Old tip from tyre fitting in the 80s is a bit of washing up liquid and water rubbed around the seal

I would advise caution with washing up liquid. Dont know the chemistry but it is corrosive when in contact with aluminium alloys. presumably strong alkaline?. How do I know? Well, I created a bit of a problem for myself with a DIY tyre change on my Triumph Thruxton which resulted in a slow leak developing after a year - the cause was corrosion on the alloy rim. This was a new motorcycle, the rim was not corroded when I removed the original tyre, so the only possible cause was the soap which was confirmed by the motorcycle tyre fitter that I had to get to fix my cock-up!

Traditionally washing up liquid contains a lot of salt which could cause some issues later.

We took the car out for a spin while the rain is light. Wife commented on a drip on her foot on the passenger side of the car. I guess I’ll be fixing the grommet.

Decided to do my grommets on the windscreen cowl as a preventative measure this weekend. The grommet/fixing isn’t that easy to get out of the bulk head and its easy to distort the metal prising it out so there was a bit of remedial metal shaping. It was also good to clear all the much that gets through the wiper aperture in the plastic cowl. I also resprayed the wiper arms in satin black whilst they were off. Just waiting for the new grommets to arrive so I can put it back together.

Sounds like I’ll have fun getting them out too :frowning:

My advice, leave the grommets in, clean up all around them and use some decent silicone seal around them. Recheck your work in a couple of years for peace of mind.
You might want to buy two new cover caps for the plastic scuttle panel, the tabs holding them in love to break when removing.

I used this product on my NC when i had it was easier than removing badges and can be peeled off if wanted to go back to chrome :+1::+1:

During a quiet period at work (pending job cut meetings with execs! )

I swapped out the side lights for the Smoked Lights off Aliexpress.

Then I drained the Power Steering oil as it did look a bit darker/black with new oil (turned the wheel to full lock on each side a few times to check the oil level.

I took the wipers off this afternoon in preparation of taking out the grommets. Plenty of crap under the driver side wiper.

The passenger side grommet seal completely fell apart as i was getting it out, so glad i purchased a large toolset from Temu to help pull out grommets and plugs.

Now all i need to do is pull out the driver side, then clean up the glass and area, then apply silicone to the new grommets.

Grommets replaced, silicone added for now. I also gave the bottom part of the glass a clean and polished as much as i could to get rid of the tide mark.

I’ve used silicone before and it does fail.

I switched to Plumbers Mait from Screwfix, or use something similar, which never sets and allows for any movement in the grommets over time.

Wouldn’t it be great if BBR did a badge to replace the skyactive one.
