What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

SORNed it.

I keep a paint/roller tray wedged in against the back wall of the compartment. Working OK so far while I plan the final fix

I just can’t bring myself to SORN mine. If we have any bright sunny winter days I will be giving her a blast to blow away the winter blues  . I have SORN’ed my campervan though, as I don’t really take it out for the same reasons during winter.

Never have SORN’d mine.

Out in it today, even though the roads are filthy.

Rain tomorrow, so maybe when it’s washed the salt off the roads, I’ll be out again in a downpour to wash all the crud off the underneath……

Just waiting for the road to dry and I’ll be heading out in mine for a quick blast. Some of the best times I’ve had in an MX-5 have been on a cold, bright winter morning with the hood down and the heater up.

I bought shifter and handbrake boots a while ago but hadn’t got around to installing them yet, because I’m planning to install a new head unit and I don’t want to take apart the center console twice.

But today I realised that the handbrake boot can be removed by itself, so I decided to fit it. I was very impressed by the fit and finish, all the holes lined up perfectly and I think it will look great once I fit the shifter one:

Im a bit of a tart really but the roads around here can be lethal in the winter and I just don’t want to end up in a ditch or get it covered in salt. I treat it the same as my bikes. I always pay my road tax monthly so it’s really easy to SORN it and put it back on the road without having to worry about getting a refund etc. Although I obviously miss driving it, I do tend to hibernate in my garage and do jobs on the car if needed and more so on the bikes. Plus it saves me Ā£30 odd a month. Lot of money to a poor old pensioner!!

If you are indeed ā€˜a poor pensioner’ do you know that it actually costs you more to tax your car the way you do it? The refunds come through very quickly.

No it’s phrase i use in jest.. I just find it easier to do it this way with vehicles i know im going to take off the road in winter. Thus saving money. Sorry, im bit odd!

But that is the point, you are NOT saving money.

But if I SORNed it for 3 months so I’m not paying anything. That around a Ā£100 I’ve saved. Of course it’s highly possible that I’m being very thick here! :joy:

When you tax your car for 1 year and then SORN it part way through that year you will get however many twelfths of the original cost that remain, back. The way you do it you are charged a 5% surcharge every month.
It does not matter how many months you tax the car as you will always be charged 5% more than someone who pays the full year up front and then claims back the remaining months after SORN.

Smashed the nearside tail light and scratched the rear bumper on the corner of my house. :face_with_symbols_on_mouth:
Then got the cover on it, just so I don’t have to look at it.
I could cry right now.

The offending corner:

Yes I think i see what you’re saying now. Maybe I’ll do that in the new year if I can afford it cos I’m just a poor pensioner.

Cheers.

Did the house survive?

For now, yes. I might give it a kicking or two later on, when no one’s looking. :face_exhaling:

Wired the cTek charging cable to the battery.

The lead is really short! might get an extension lead, costs an extra 15 quid ! so I can plug it in without opening the bonnet.

Went in garage to check things out after the dramatic sub-zero to 14deg temp swing the other day.

Covered with nice clean soft cotton dust sheets when sorn and tucked up, but sheets were damp and condensation running down bodywork underneath.

Everything aired out, dried out, cleaned and covered again now. Like to keep the dust off and paintwork shiny over winter, but need to keep and eye on temperature and humidity for the blasted condensation issues in our unheated garage
