What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Hi Malc… I’ve a poor relation of your Superlight that we run at the likes of Castle Combe… a “mid-lit” Aldon prepared Westie SE Narrow. On slick Hoosiers it does the same thing… off-line it grit blasts the leading edge of the rear arches… and anyone following!

To be honest I had not expected Toyo R888R’s on my NC to be as sticky!

Changing the subject, do you or anyone have any experience of the quick shifters that are available. I’m considering the Super Short NC 6spd throw unit from GracingShifters.com in Miami as it gets a lot of good (American) reviews? Unlike most, it gets rid of the clunky reverse selector in favour of a twist lock that loses lots of mechanism and improves precision.

I certainly would not advise a ‘quick shifter’ on the ND. You can change gear with the standard lever quicker than the gearbox can cope with as it is. Sorry I have no experience for the NC.

Using a traditional roller brake tester (rolling road) on a car equipped with a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) can potentially damage the differential due to the rotational speed difference between wheels.

While some LSDs may handle it, many MOT testers prefer to use a deceleration meter (Tapley meter) to avoid issues.

The reason I take mine to the same MOT testers, they have always (on 4 MX-5’s) road test/check the brakes. I’m taking the ND for it’s first test with them this month.

Delivered my ND to the local garage on a flatbed, where they diagnosed what I thought was a failed diff as the (frankly far more likely) gearbox failure. Newer gearbox ordered. Now to decide whether to upgrade the clutch or not, given the extra torque of the BBR Super 200. Any experience of upgraded clutches in the ND greatly appreciated.

Just a shout out to Moss Europe. I fitted a Cobalt back box to my NC1 in 2023 and a couple of weeks ago, I found the left forward hanger had cracked around the weld and sheared the pipe, leaving a fingernail sized hole. Moss Europe supplied a replacement under warranty and I fitted this yesterday. Really excellent service from everyone I spoke to at Moss. I supplied a bunch of photos and they honoured the warranty based on those. Many thanks to them - very much appreciated.

I haven’t fitted an uprated clutch but I have run the Super200 since Sep 16 with 33k miles on the standard clutch with no problems whatsoever. I would suggest waiting until the clutch is removed and the failure is determined before making the decision to go for an uprated clutch.

Changed the rusty lugnuts by some Enkei duralumin nuts.

Attempted to change the oil in the gearbox and diff. Such a ballache to do the gear box, spent more time trying to make sure I didn’t snap any bolts or nuts. Came across a free spinning bolt on one of the skid pans

A few missing nuts and bolts from the other parts but tucked inside of the frames. But I managed to get other parts off until I got to the refill nut for the gearbox, not one of my sockets would fit it, I went through my Dewalt sockets and then the US Pro sockets.

I will have another go over the weekend once I get some chores out of the way, I’m not going to let this beat me!

Handy for measuring the OCD pressure of the driver.

Well done, this is on my list to do..did not anticipate a battle tho…gearbox oil change

Me and uncle Rodney don’t get on very well.

Cleaned etc all the rubber seals around PRHT, windows, doors and boot lid. Two and a half hours playing with lid at varying degrees of open, merely to access all the lid rubber!

They looked and felt OK after a damp-wipe with microfibre, which shifted small amounts of brown.

But then after loads of Gummi-Pflege I found it amazing how much more brown stuff (dust, pollen) came off on a clean dry micro-fibre.

It wasn’t leaking in the rain, but the wind noise is noticeably less now when lid is up. So it’s worth doing.

Replaced the lockout plate, the lower ball cup and the two white plastic locating parts on my NC2 6 speed shifter (and sucked out the old oil and replaced with fresh) and I’ll be honest, it doesn’t feel all that much better? When cold 1st to 2nd still seems quite difficult and even when it all warms up, it doesn’t seem the smoothest of changes, a bit clunky.

Don’t remember my 5 speed NC1 (with more miles) feeling like this. Anyone got any experience? Is this just what the 6 speed is like?

As you can see, the plat did need replacing!

(Pictures are pre me replacing the parts)
