What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Tried and failed to remove the double DIN factory radio cassette player from my shiny new 2003 Mk2.5, so I can fit the new Sony Bluetooth DAB CD USB ETC thing. Some cutting of coat hangers to make the removal tools, much wiggling and pulling on said tools, and loads of swearing.

Net result, one side came slightly free for a while, then clicked back into place while I was trying to free the other, and one of the buttons popped off and is now held on by hope and bit of insulting tape. My friendly local garage is going to take a look when I can get the car down there.

I use a selection of thin screwdrivers to help get mine out

Yes - I bent a couple of screwdrivers too  I may have been firtling around with the wrong holes - there are 10 to choose from. Thanks for the tip though. I’ll have another go tomorrow when I’m less tired.

Nothing worse than trying the wrong hole. I’d be interested to see what unit you are going to install as I’m considering upgrading mine

A lovely iconic MX5 ND…
It’s always a joy to look at these ND cars, Some of the colours that at first you think might not be appealing but at the National Rally There were some that showed that MX5 ND’s doesn’t have to be White Blood Red or Wine red Type of Colours. Some of the most eye catching were actually dark and light grey But have to be seen in the flesh To see their beauty They don’t look their best in photos but they do show up the lines at their best… just my opinion,

I chose this one

I thought about a cheaper CD-less version, but I do occasionally like to listen to CDs. I’ll report back if I ever get it fitted

That looks pretty smart. If I change mine I’ll probably go for a double din unit. Don’t give up trying to get yours out. Once one side is free, slide a credit card in the side of the stereo to prevent it re engaging. Then pop the other side out

Sorry to hear that. Was that pulling forwards up to a kerb? I did it in my previous lowered ND parking up at the dealer. It was the standard winglet that hit the kerb and there was quite a loud crunch. Luckily the plastic was not severely damaged and I was able to repair it. You are quite lucky that the bonnet did not explode as well if you managed to destroy your splitter.

I bought a pair of these to facilitate the removal of the OEM unit in my NB, available for not very much from Amazon, ebay, etc:

It popped out without too much difficulty. Everything I want to listen to is on my phone so I only need bluetooth. I bought one of these ‘vintage look’ bluetooth radios from ebay for £15. It works a treat. Must admit, I hardly ever use it. I like the sound the car makes! I was more after the look , than anything. That OEM unit is an ugly monstrosity and it weighs a ton. I’m sure my 5 is grateful not to be lugging the weight around!

Fitted a X brace strut bar, looks great and weights virtual nothing.

This would be a very easy job, but there are a number of small components which are attached to the strut brace. It was very fiddly to fit these.

Discovered my fuel gauge was not accurate…. I though my new ECU & map was efficient….

Obviously not………walked home grabbed the can of fuel for the lawnmower and problem solved!

Little bits of personalising can be spotted on my lovely MX5 NC …

They can stick on empty once empty actually takes place Even after putting a full tank in… It happens on lots of cars. My Recent RCZ did it regularly during the lockdown, Another lovely little future classic the RCZ is to become, especially the RCZ magnetic only 175 made and the RCZ R is the top future model.

I used to own a couple of those many years ago  I fabricated four of my own yesterday from a wire coat hangar, and they contributed to the eventual successful removal of the old stereo, along with several small screwdrivers, a bradawl and a crochet hook!

Thanks for the tip - that made all the difference. The old unit is out, the new one sitting in place and working \_o_/ Tomorrow, I’ll position the DAB aerial (probably behind the glove box) and the microphone (at the base of the A pillar), fix the unit in place and fit the cubby box and the phone clip. Then I’ll read the manual and find out how to drive the unit

Thanks for the help and support!

Glad it helped

It was indeed, pulled one of the jack nuts out of the bumper and twisted the whole splitter down, only on the front left:

Already replaced with a washer a nut, now I just need to tidy the scratches up!

Beyond beautiful … enjoy…
