What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Changed the power steering fluid. Used a Hilka siphon/pump I bought at Screwfix for a few quid to empty the reservoir as much as you can . Then in with new fluid. Old fluid had been in car since new ie 14 years ago so well past sell by date. Made a big difference to the steering . Well pleased . Loads of vids on YouTube showing you how.

Hi Rob, that’s good to know.
Probably a job many of us should get around to :+1:
Glad it made a difference.
What fluid did you put in yours?

Cheers,
Guy

I also fitted new door bushes, but mine were from Moss Europe. Easy to install but I need to trim them slightly as I now have to slam the doors to close them properly. Can’t say I’ve noticed any improvement in body stiffness or handling, but they sure look better than the originals.

Ray,
I was referring to the door bushes.

8f you have to slam the doors now, something is wrong.
Try taking the bushes out and sliding them into the door cups.
They should slide in nicely. If not then sand them down to fit.
When adjusting the bushes to fit, leave the windows open, so the air pressure in the cabin doesn’t interfere with closing the doors.
Start with bolts loosish and gradually tighten in between opening and closing the doors several times

SORN’d my 1998 NB.

It doesn’t get driven in the winter and this year it’s done little apart from the Elvington World Record Attempt. No point giving vehicle tax money away to the government via DVLA for no good reason. The refund will more than pay for the new insurance on my other car, which is due very soon!

Thanks For your reply , I had guessed so Bless you …

Agreed. When testing, they fitted snugly in the cups - tight enough so they didn’t fall out, but not too tight. I think the adjustment required is to the face of the bush, the side which makes contact with the back of the cup. The bush itself can’t go any further towards the interior of the car, so the advice is to paint the face with Tippex and operate the door several times. The Tippex should come off at any high points and you just sand those down. Now I just need to get some Tippex fluid, which we don’t stock at work as it’s all rollers now.

Had my guy back to bring the passenger seat quality up to match the recently refurbed drivers side.
£££ well spent.

Absolutely lovely to see an MX5 NC looking like that does underneath .

My car is completely unmarked on the bodywork. I was astonished to see how grotty they get underneath No rot but in need of a complete clean and paint up How much would it cost to get one looking like your beauty … ? Or is it simple hard work by yourself. In any case it’s a Pure dream to look at Best regards from Ray …Essex

All done by myself over a winter. I was lucky as it must have led an easy life before I got it (I’m the second owner) as it was exceptionally good at the time I dived under it.

It was a treat to see your beauty … My one has been garaged since new. And the outside is as you would expect… (A virtual Museum specimen) , But recently I had reason to look under it and was surprised at the ugly ness of all the back suspension arms etc, The underside was rock solid itself ( No rot etc) But looked nothing like the top of the car did, Perhaps I had expected too much ! I certainly ‘did‘ after seeing your beauty … Thanks for your reply. Best regards from Ray In Essex
I could have lived with a bit of underside mess UNTIL I saw your one,
A couple of things Davy Was it up on a hoist As you did the work ? Or did you just get under it etc… Ray…

I had it on 4 jack stands, all wheels off. I now have a Sealey portable pivot lift which is handy.

Thanks for your update Davy … Keeping it that lovely must be quite challenging for you. But the main task has been achieved Now it is probably much easier … My MX5 is so polished that even after a downpour it takes Just a few minutes to wipe off … Best regards Davy It’s a true credit to you. …Ray …Essex

And it’s in (and working  )
