Crikey, I hadn’t thought of pulling the roof “up” whilst moving at 40 mph !
who would be steering my car whilst I am kneeling backwards tugging at the top against the wind at 40 mph ?
That’s asking for trouble especially in outside lane of the M25 during peak time, Only joking Best regards from Ray
Happily I can report No button‘s ! We are not “molly coddled“ in our rag tops, Just primitive motoring for us lot, Even my mobile phone runs on coal !
Incidentally I can put my soft top “up” and “ Down” in 6 seconds with no help from an electric motor ! Lovely simplicity eh, Thanks for your lovely “heart“ Bruce … best regards from Ray in Essex
25mm H&R spacers are spot on for the NC (if on standard wheels),… The NC also look much much nicer if Lowered on 30mm lowering springs by H&R. Such modifications completely change the ‘ stance ‘ and appearance of the NC.
W.I.M (Chesham) top company for the job… Joe is their Magician …
I’ve been putting the roof up and down in my nd1 at 40mph since the summer. No issues. I’ve filed the roll hoop covers away to a smooth flatness where they could possibly catch on the roof. It’s awesome.
We drove to wales in August and had the top up and down due to rain 20 times on the way up from Sussex, brilliant fun. I could just imagine the people behind smiling as it rained thinking I was about to get wet only to see the top come up and the windows automatically close. Haha.
Good job. Something I have considered doing (reprofiling the roll hoop covers) as to me that is the best solution. I just don’t know why Mazda haven’t change the profile of the covers as it would be relatively easy to do (an insert in the tooling). It would prevent all the warranty claims for new roofs and new roll hoop covers)
That’s real cool You are certainly enjoying what must be one of the most beautiful and reliable roadsters on earth… Bless you both And bless that lovely ND of yours too… have you got a powered hood ? If not can the ND be bought with a powered soft top ? I know your ND has the soft top option ( better looking Than the hard top ) Is it raised manually or electrically ? Best regards from Ray in Essex
What is happening with the ND roll hoops ? Are they chaffing on parts of the roof then ? You are not the only one mentioning this problem, Best regards from Ray in Essex. ( just being nosy )
Yes the hood is raised manually on the ND soft top and yes, on some ND cars they do rub on the roll hoop covers and wear the fabric on the leading edge of the hood when the hood is down (as a result of manufacturing and assembly tolerances). The Mazda fix is to fit some spacers to the hood mounting to gain extra clearance (which is still minimal). I noticed the hood was touching the roll hoop covers on my car when I bought it new. I got the dealer to sort it under warranty straight away using the spacer fix. These things should be picked up at PDI and fixed before the customer gets the car to avoid warranty claims for damaged hoods. I think that reprofiling of the roll hoop covers would be a much better solution as it is far easier to replace these than start dismantling the hood mountings to fit spacers. If I have the time I lower the hood from outside the car to ensure maximum clearance and that there is no rubbing. Sometimes whilst driving I just throw the hood back and if I can (without causing a muscle strain) I reach backwards and press on the rear of the hood to improve clearance.
Cheers to you too, for your extremely comprehensive reply. I had wondered about how the ‘ soft top ND was operated And had noticed several mentions of the hoop / Roof problems. Both cleared up by you … Thanks Very much indeed
Best regards from Ray in Essex…
Yours is one of those MX5’s That stands out in a crowd ‘ Lovely colour too’ It’s a real beauty … I stopped to look at It when my eyes caught sight of it. I don’t do that with too many, Enjoy it, I know you do ! Best from Ray in Essex… glad you don’t live in Essex I’d have a bit of competition…I see you like stickers So do I. I love tinkering with my car. Personalising is so enjoyable, I know I am doing something nice when little old ladies stop and pass comment … “ oh isn’t your car lovely “ Etc. Makes you feel good too…lastly … is the new sticker the one that fades along the doors ? Lastly does the wording come as part of the transfer?
My MX5 is the MX5 NC1 I Much prefer the MX5 NC 2 In preference Davy please don’t feel a need to reply to this lengthy post I’m a bit of a chatter box on here and to be avoided. Ask Roadie he’d tell ya… All the best from Ray…
There’s no powered soft top on any of them as far as I know. Only PRHT on the NC and the RF.
I just levelled my lights tonight with the mx5things obd2 dongle. I had it lowered a while back and it might have been done by the guys that did it but I think I got a little extra height.
Gonna do another friend’s ND this weekend who has his slammed on coilovers and is sure he has his lights too low.
I’m sure you are correct Chris It seems the soft tops are all Manual operated , The simplicity of the soft top is a joy… I once had a Mercedes SL The roof mechanism failed and it cost me a fortune… Having stuck half open in the pouring rain one dark night … We Don’t have that problem to look forward to eh… Anyway Chris Take care this virus isn’t going away any time soon, My partner should know she sees it every day in the course of her work… best regards from Ray …in Essex
Mine has some marks on the roll hoops… I put that down to the roof being opened whilst sitting in the car which naturally pulls the top forward (Previous owner!)… Opening from standing at the side of the car it doesn’t rub even though it’s close…!
