Totally speechless! A new reg for my girl, out of the blue from my family for my birthday, perfect!
Fantastic idea for a birthday present and Happy Birthday
Fitted replacement buttons to the catches of my hard top. Hopefully will stop the catch flipping open now.
When I sold my NB, I told the buyer the hardtop latch was loose, he adjusted it there and then, all rather embarrassing. I never realised it has an adjustment screw. Only sharing just in case…
I did the dreaded thermostat on my NC today. All went OK and it’s now running at 92 degrees instead of 75 according to the OBD. Took quite a while to fully burp the heater but now laser-like in it’s intensity.
I found that looking from the top, you can get half an eyeball on the ‘invisible’ bolt above the smaller hose to locate the socket and I found undoing that one last was best so I could lift the old thermostat away with the socket still on the bolt, so no chance of the bolt dropping into the depths.
Took my Wife’s MX for its MOT, needs new back tyres and a spot of welding first before a pass!
So, in my first week of MX5 ownership, I’ve achieved the following:
Gone for a Stubby
Added one of @Roadie tinted wind deflectors
Jass Performance gear knob and handbrake (just to lift the sea of black slightly)
Added a Smart Top controller
And changed her registration.
That’s enough for now!
(Apart from a boot lid re-spray and a detailer coming to look at a machine polish!)
MOT passed with no advisories yesterday… that’s the second year running that is done that. MoT tester commented on how good condition it was underneath. Only 814 miles between MOTs though must do some more motoring next year.
After finding the small rust holes in the inner wings just behind and below the headlamps the other week, I cut the rust out and welded some small patches in, and as I didn’t really want to put filler in there I decided to put a light covering of stone chip as you can’t really see the the repairs because the head lamps. I got the paint mixed from my local paint supplier and it came out okay, although the stone chip on one side went a bit awry. When I removed the plastic trim from the wheel arch, there was rust on every part of the wheel arch where the trim attached, so I cleaned, put Kurust on and painted Smoothrite on then Waxoyled everything. I then worked back down the car and although the car was Waxoyl treated when I got it I cleaned off any flacky bits and treated them, trouble is I found this on the drivers side.
Around this it was solid, even inside was okay, anyway I fixed this although I haven’t taken any photos off the finished work yet, the other side was fine except for a small part of the footwell panel where it overlaps the floor pan, and I trimmed this of and made a new piece to go in, strangely the panel underneath was perfect. All done now.

This is the Obergruppenfuhrer’s part in all this.
4 wheel alignment today. Wasn’t too bad before considering I’ve replaced brakes and suspension myself and lowered the car myself too.
Well it started with me refitting my hardtop only to find the catches springing open each time I closed them. So searched on this site and found a company that make slightly thicker catch buttons. Only problem was that the catches were held on with torx bolts and my feeble screwdriver tool couldn’t get passed the locktight. No problem buy a torx socket (3/8) to fit the old torque wrench I have. Wrench is 1/2 inch so go back and buy a 3/8 wrench, an extension piece and some sockets while I am there. Do catches and refit hard top. Noticed previously that one of the rear numberplate light fittings was hanging off and was loose when I refitted it, so a pair of led replacements while there is a sale on solves this problem. Spot the difference.
I do like some of the buzz weld products. Been using them on land rovers for a few years now and also always good quality. Planning on getting them to rust proof my MX5 when it arrives.
That LED bulb makes a world of difference.
Big improvement.
I can’t imagine any issues at MOT time either.
Nice mod
I bought her a few presents this week.
An original MK2 boot spoiler
A new rear caliper
Some nice yellow ignition leads
Took Zippy for his MOT today - PASS - No advisories
Failed first time round with rust holes where sill meets rear wheel-arch so I had to get some welding done to get him through, and dodgy droplinks I did myself. I disconnected the DRLs in foglight position this time, as even though they are not a testable item (2006) on the first test the tester spent a good 5 minutes turning sidelights, foglights, headlights on and off to ascertain the operation.
have removed the front number plate plinth, cut seven inches out of the centre and rejoined it, reattached to grill and new shortened number plates fitted front and rear.
New tyres fitted all round, tightened a loosening hard top, took delivery of a new Panasonic battery, ordered a bulb kit, new power steering and alternator belts and spark plugs…
