Where have you been in your MX-5 today?

Great day over at Blyton park Sunday , chasing my niece around in her GTI on her first track day with tuition .

So yesterday, it was a beautiful autumnal morning with the sun shining on all those leaves, so decided to see if Soul Red would match the background

Like the first pic! Popped down to Penzance to pick up some new wiper blades for the Volvo. Did try some five quid jobbies off the bay but they were cr@p. Unlike your parcel, mine fitted comfortably into the passenger bay.
The Volvo V60 D4, despite its 140k sailed through its MOT yesterday without advisories. It is chalk & cheese with the MX but they are complimentary. One a floaty, effortless barge( but with twin turbos/200bhp/ Mondeo chassis mind) and the other that feels desperately fast whilst just doing sixty. I’m obviously being conned by both and don’t mind at all…

Had a week away in Taranaki which is home to our most distinctive volcano. It is also a traditional farming district, with a wet climate that makes grass grow so is still a major dairy area.
The weather was changeable all week but despite this being roadworks season we managed to keep the 5 clean until about 50 kilometres from home where we encountered about a kilometre of very wet dirt with an advisory sign ‘cement splashes’. This seems to be the latest roadworks technique and resulted in the car getting liberally coated with cement based gunge from the waistline down. I have just spent seven hours trying to clean it and will still have to get it up in the air with the wheels off to make a proper job. Heading the other way in the roadworks was a chap in a black McLaren - guess he would have a man to attend to the cleaning!
First pic is at our coffee stop in a town called Bulls, which has life size plastic bulls around the town.

Mount Egmont

I dont know why there is a large rubber duck in the middle of the river.

My MX5 has been on “general shopping and trundling around town” duties this weekend, as The Other Car failed its MOT with a broken spring on Friday. Garage need to hold on to it until Monday while they get a spare part in. (and I’d sooner that fault was discovered at a garage, than at the roadside!)

A useful reminder that our MX5s make useful everyday cars, too!

Went out for a Festive afternoon tea at a certain royal residence near Tetbury.

Took SAZ for its annual trip to Thrussington Garage for service and MOT. Shamefully, I’ve only driven it 740kms in the last 12 months; thats less than during lockdown (790kms). Just turned 280,000 kms (about 180k of those due to me). No advisories, and perfect, utterly perfect, emissions. Thrussington saw fit to stick on the service docket about an oil leak I’ve had for years, and a bit of rust that might need welding (but, no advisory, the car maintains its clean MOT rust record).

These days the car is feeling arthritic, creaky and squeaky. I’m not sure how the ancient bushes are surviving all this time. I thought something was up with the power steering, as it felt heavy, but then realised I’m conditioned to a 20 year old Jag XJ X350 steering.

Starting at -1 with the roof down, earmuffs and heated scarf on. North East Midlands group had a lovely drive the the Derbyshire peak district. It’s so pretty with the snow covering the fields. A

voiding the sheep, ending at Tissington Hall. What an amazing Grade II listed House. Sir Richard Fitzherbert was a great host, telling lots of stories, he was hilarious too . Scones and Tea to finish. I’m so pleased I had the day off to join my Mx5 friends today. Making for a most memorable day .

Saturday afternoon drive to enjoy the sunshine. Stopped for an ice cream and parked next to an NA which looked better from the other end - the clear coat is showing the effects of our harsh sunshine, just like the old Mitzi on the other side of the ND.

In the 70’s I transported a 15’-0" bare root silver birch in a 2CV…! Just rolled the roof back and popped the back seat out. Got some fully looks.

Considering the comparatively easy and cheap fix for the clearcoat problem, i don’t really understand why anyone would allow a classic to look like that!

355 mile round trip yesterday down to Thruxton with @McrNick for a Pistonheads Sunday Service, complete with skidpan session. Great fun, whilst honing some skills :open_hands:

Thanks to Nick for the photo - the skidpan sessions were laid on by Mission Motorsport, who had an ND on hand for rent.

It is a fact of life that every one does not have the funds to do things ‘properly’. I have not always been as comfortable as I am now and in the past have had to resort to using remoulds and second hand tyres in order to ‘balance the books’.
Just because you are short on funds does not need to exclude you from running a ‘special’ car.

Absolutely! I also have been guilty of using remoulds and even dodgy breakers yard stuff back in the day. A 1963 Austin 1100, not exactly a classic but i made the paintwork look nice even though it was a rusty wreck. My point was, for the price of a few rattle cans of clearcoat and some wet and dry paper, the front can be made to look much better and in fact a bit of Tcut and some elbow grease would do it. I suppose it comes down to whether the owner can be bothered. I bet those wheels weren’t cheap!

Went to collect a bluetooth dac for my hifi this morning…great drive over the Woodhead, onto Chistworth, Glossop, Snake Pass, Strines, back home.
Top down all the way, what a blast

Hifi, its an age thing :joy:
I picked up a ifi zen blue, I’m running it through a Musical Fidelity amp through some ace JPW Sonata speakers, set up is a little old school had it years but, like an MX-5 it just keeps going and sounds great.
Give some volume still sounds punchy.
I suppose you could say I’m kinda old school too :slightly_smiling_face:
