My SE-L spec ND1 doesn’t have one, but I picked up a Mazda6 version with dimming from a breakers with the plug and wiring attached. It’s still on my ‘to-do’ list, as it’s a definite downside to driving a '5 in the darker part of the year!
One similar to this, but I made sure I found one with the wiring plug still attached, to make things easier.
It looks like the plug is natively 10 way but only 4 of the the lower 5 pins are populated. THIS site gives the connections.
I can’t see the need for a permanent 12V for this (would also be a parasitical battery drain) so would imagine it’s safe to link pin 6 and 10 and connect to the ignition switched 12V.
Just got back from a weeks stay in New Plymouth. Took this photo on the first leg of the return journey showing Mt Egmont. At that stage we were hood down but by the time we got to our lunch stop the hood had to go up and the aircon on. Not an especially hot day, about 23° C but our sun is so intense it gets pretty uncomfortable and the burn time is in the 30 minute zone. This is only spring!
That’s a cracking photo, but you’ve hit on the exact reason that I probably wouldn’t have an MX-5 in NZ. Man, I do not miss roasting alive on a cloudy day, let alone when it’s sunny.
We went to the Nurburgring in September for four days great weather. Same problem with the GT3’s bullying their way through. Struggled to keep on the best line with the fast Porsches looming down on you on the straights and having to move over then compromising my corner entry
Went over to Hawarden Airport for my first club meet for Cheshire & North Wales. Before I left the house, the weather wasn’t the best; I almost had two thoughts about going but thought, the car is 17 years old, its been through worse weather with its previous owners, get out and enjoy the drive.
I enjoyed meeting everyone, a hood turnout before I left to head back to Formby.
Don’t know if its old age or climate change but through the mid seventies to mid nineties we had a Plus 4 with no hood or sidescreens that was our daily driver rain or shine. Did not seem to notice the sun so much them, but it really is a problem these days.
