What have you done to your MX-5 today? (Part 2)

Excellent! No issues? When I fitted mine, all went well, no conflict with studs protruding and interference with back of wheel. Great quality I found too! :+1:

Morning Barrie. I actually chose these after reading your recommendation of them, and seeing the great results on your car. They fit perfectly, zero issues to install and Iā€™m really happy with the results:

Cheers Barrie. Not as good as yours though, loving your new paintwork and the spoiler & splitter combo.

Saw and pounced on a hard top.

  • Ā£350
  • Less than 10 miles away
  • Good condition
  • The right blue colour

This is only the second one Iā€™ve ever seen offered in Strato Blue and I strongly suspect that I could wait a further twenty years and not see one come up with that combination of plus points.

Went over to collect it, only to find that it doesnā€™t fit in my big car. :man_facepalming:t2:
Seller has room enough to keep hold of it until my little car is through its repairs and MOT and then Iā€™ll pick it up and put it on to bring it home.

A day of good results!

Ordered new PAS & Alt belts for our 106,000 miles 2002 Sport.
While Iā€™m ā€œon itā€ for general servicing (over servicing perhaps) oddly for me, Iā€™ve never bothered about these belts in 15 years when it was bought with 44k on the clock in 2006.
Looked up our sheaves of service bills, it seems they are still good 'ol Hiroshima, but the Alt in particular has suddenly started to crack and sound dodgy.
Oh well, the new ones should last till Iā€™m 88 thenā€¦

Youā€™re splashing out a bit arenā€™t you  :+1::+1: only joking! funny thing belts, Mrs Bā€™s Audi A6 has 43k on it at 5 years old, Audi say 140k timing belt change, OR 5 years! So weā€™re nearly 100k short on miles but at the limit in time?

Ah!
Now timing belts & water pumps etcā€¦different league. Got them done at 70k milesā€¦years back.
Same with Mk1ā€¦when it was getting a new engine anyway!

Looks great, tempted to do some spacers on my NC. Does that front one cause the wheel to stick out beyond the arch? Howā€™s the legality on that (was always under the impression the wheel wasnā€™t allowed to stick out beyond the arch, but I might be making that up!)?

As Iā€™m currently without an MX5, decided to polish the hob instead. What a bu@@er for marks - far worse than Mazda paintwork.

Hi Aaron,
The wheels are exactly in line with the top of the wheel arch, so donā€™t actually stick out beyond them (when wheels pointed forward). Not sure on any legal issues, but wouldnā€™t want them any wider as they would be beyond the wheel arches after this 25mm additional spacing.
Fitting was easy, great quality items, would highly recommend (as did Barrie who prompted my investigation on them).
Cheers

Perfect! They look great, makes a difference from them being about 3 miles in from the arches aha, I think thatā€™s my next mod sorted!

I believe the tyres and wheels should be within the bodywork when viewed from directly above. Thatā€™s why the rear arches on the ND have the small black plastic trim sticking out that looks to have no purpose. Or maybe Iā€™m making that up too.

My thinking, they are to deflect any spray from the rear wheels that otherwise goes up the rear side paintwork.

I think you are right I believe BMW have started adding these plastic arches on their performance models (you can see them on the new M3) for the very reason of ensuring wheels donā€™t extend outside of the body

I always understood that the little plastic lips were to do with aerodynamic flow to ensure that the rear lights keep clean in dirty conditions. And no, the tyres should not protrude further than the top of the wheel arches. I was always led to believe that this was to prevent the remote chance of pedestrians getting loose cloths such as long coats, skirts etc. getting accidently caught up in the tyre and getting wrapped up in it. It amazes me how many modified Land Rovers and other off-roaders have tyres sticking out well beyond the wheel arches.

I was told that MOT wise, tyres/wheels beyond the bodywork is fine, although the police can take you to task over it?

A while ago I discovered the rubber on my anti-freeze tester had perished causing the tube to fall out, and the end to degrade round the edges. Figured it was good for nothing but with the lockdowns it never got further than the box I left it in.

So, in trying to find a new gasket for the battery vent pipe I couldnā€™t find any oval rubber gaskets/grommets/o-rings of the right size, so decided to make my own. Hunting all over for suitable rubber I came across the anti-freeze tester and itsā€™ nice big rubber bulb.

So, using a knife, small swiss army knife scissors and emery cloth I cut, snipped and sanded (the rubber was about 2/3rds too thick) the top portion of the bulb down to size to create a new gasket:

Once this was done I discovered my boot area was full of some strange white dust, so had to wipe it down before proceeding to putting everything back together again after the whole de-rusting and respraying of the battery area, and dealing with all the sheared bolts:

New battery vent gasket looking good (shame the photo still shows orange patches of rust - ah well):

The (almost) finished job:

(really could do with a new battery tray at some point, the one that came with the car is a massacred wreck).

I say almost finished because the boot carpet has ended up dusty and needs vacuuming, but once thatā€™s done I can finally put the battery carpet back on and get all the stuff back in the car.

Still donā€™t know if the key works after itsā€™ unfortunate trip through the washing machine mindā€¦

And for those interested, hereā€™s what the new battery clamp area looks like on the underside with my (previously mentioned in this thread) custom made bracket:

(Have to admit, it looked alot neater without having the flash enabled on the camera). But as mentioned before, it was all done with the car unable to be jacked up so itā€™s not too bad considering all the squirming.

And hereā€™s what the old underside bracket that the above replaced looks like:
